Stations still airing a local "Christmas Day Mass"

Looking at a recent retro schedule posted on the Classic TV board, it seems that WHDH in Boston has been airing the local Christmas Day Mass from the Boston Catholic TV center since it first started in the 1950s. WHDH still airs the Christmas Day Mass every year, even to this day, which is surprising hence the root that WHDH has taken over the last several years. It is very rare for local stations to air a local Christmas Mass in this day in age. Do any other stations still do it?

Wait, WHDH is a plant? That would explain how they took root. ;)

KSL Radio airs a Christmas Eve Mass (I guess it's called a "Mass") at midnight on Christmas Eve, although it is recorded in the afternoon, at the local Cathedral.

This year, many CBS stations will be airing a Christmas Eve afternoon mass, led by Tim Tebow.

If that event (game) will be shown here in south FL, I plan to be part of that "mass" audience.... :)

Given that Christmas is on a Sunday, WPXI-11 will have its Mass for Shut-Ins, though it now is carried on the MeTV channel 11.2 rather than the main channel 11.1 which competes with WTAE-4.1 for early Sunday news viewers.

WBGN-59.1 carries a daily noon Mass from St. Mary of Mercy Church in downtown Pittsburgh, which also is carried on Comcast access channels (Comcast does not carry WBGN, FiOS does) and on the Christian Associates cable channel (which if memory serves me correctly also has a regular Mass from St. Paul Cathedral).

KING/5 Seattle will be carrying a mass live from St. James Cathedral in Seattle at midnight Christmas Eve, pushing the Pope to about 1:30 AM.

On the national level, I see that KOIN 6 Portland (CBS) is showing Christmas in Chelsea Square at 11:35pm on 12/24...probably a CBS special. On the other hand, KATU (ABC) is showing the X-Mas mass from Buffalo at 11:35pm, while my local KOMO shows it at 5am Christmas morning.

Mass? Around here there aren't many Catholics, although the number has increased as more people have moved south, mostly in the urban areas.

But I'm sure there are stations airing church services on Christmas day. Actually, since that is Sunday this year, I'm sure of it.

In the UK ITV still show midnight mass* on Christmas Eve, from 23.15 to 0.15

On Christmas Morning the BBC show a service from a major cathedral- this year it is Lichfield.

*In the UK I think we use the term 'midnight mass' for Christmas Eve services (only), even in the Anglican and Methodist faiths. Don't quote me on that, though, as I don't go to church at all.

EDIT: it seems it's way, way more complicated than that. If anyone can be bothered (I can't) there is a chuffing great article on Wikipedia about the terminology

I'm Methodist (in the US) and we don't use the term "mass" at all.

Yeah. I think I've got that one totally wrong. I know I've heard 'midnight mass' used by members of the Church of England which is Anglican Protestant...but maybe not by Methodists...I honestly can't remember as I haven't been to church since the 90s.

Anyway, I note that ITV have listed the programme as simply a 'carol service'.

Went to a Lutheran church in NYC in the late 50's and they had a Mass very closely resembling the Catholic and Anglican High Mass, It was the Lutheran church that did the Jazz Masses that today sits under the corner of the Citibank Tower. FYI, I saw a documentry about the odd design of the building which was done to allow the Lutheran church to remain. Years after it was built a student called called the architect with a question about its stability in high winds. It turned out that there was a fatal flaw in the design that would topple the building if there were winds over 85mph. As it would happen a hurricane was churning in the leeward islands and predicted to come up the east coast.

It turned out to be such a major embarrasment and danger that the building there was an emergeny rush to rebuil the tower from the inside on the QT after hours. I think architects name was Bill Lemesure

Just as a matter of interest, do they show adverts during these services, or do the stations show them as a public service/PR type thing?

No commercials, and no network "logo bug" in the corner of the screen.
