Stations That Play Pre-1964

As was mentioned by someone in a previous post, I would like to see a list of stations that play pre-1964. At least 15% of the oldies from 1955-1963.

WMTR-NJ
WRLL-Chicago
WLNG-Long Island
WMID-Jersey Shore
WWKB-Buffalo

Who else plays Buddy Holly, Connie Francis, Bobby Rydell and Fats Domino?<P ID="signature">______________

Add non-commercial WXRB-FM (95.1), Dudley-Webster, MA as well... (plays 1954-1979 to be precise) and WARE (1250), Ware, MA as well.

I'm a BIG KB/1520 and WLNG fan myself!

The True Oldies Channel plays plenty.

WZZN-Chicago

WIZD-Rudolph/Stevens Point/Central Wisconsin is mostly 60s-70s but they do play some 50s and early 60s as well as songs from the 60s that are rarely heard on the radio anywhere.

Non-commercial WRBK/Richburg, SC (Charlotte, NC/Rock Hill, SC suburb) plays a wide variety of oldies from '55 to '78 if I heard their sweepers correctly.

Also, the new Cool 92.1 (WCDG, Moyock, VA) plays some pre-64 stuff, including "Only You," "Blueberry Hill" and other big hits. But, I wouldn't say 15% of it is pre-'64.

Are they still on the air? Last time I heard them was a couple years ago, but they had a ZERO, and I mean ZERO spot load. And this was AM drive!!

Unless they've changed format I wouldn't call them an oldies station, as most everything I've heard there was either hillbilly-country or pre-1950 (or both).

Scott Shannon's True Oldies Network Affiliates:

830 WCRN Worcester, Massachusetts. (Has some talk programming and some Play-By-Play Action). *Station is independently owned by Carter Broadcasting.*

850 WREF Danbury, CT. (COL is Ridgefield). Station is daytime only. *Station is independently owned by Berkshire Broadcasting. Not connected to the Berkshire Broadcasting that used to own stations in Massachusetts.*

1450 WMAS Springfield, MA. *Station is owned by Citadel* Not sure what else is on this station. Station's website is one page off their much popular AC FM Station and the page still shows them as Liberal Talk.

Non T.O.N. Affiliates:

Oldies 1470 WKAP Allentown, PA. *Station is owned by Clear Channel.* Carries the Phillies Baseball Team. Has Live DJs but is also partially automated and has some syndicated Oldies Programming. IIRC they play music from 1959-1974, but I could be wrong. Oldies 1470 WKAP

WIZZ 1520 Greenfield, MA. *Station is independently owned and is a daytime only station*. WIZZ Radio 1520. (Having trouble getting site to work with Netscape 7.2 Works Fine with Internet Exlporer).

Amen on that one. I discovered KDAV when I first got my computer. I used to stream it all the time. They played stuff no other station would touch. Truly a unique station. After the powers that be nearly wiped out all the good radio station streams on the internet several years ago, KDAV still streamed for a while but I think you have to pay to listen now. Its a shame, its a good one.

KISN Portland has been moved back to its legendary position on the AM dial after losing its FM spot to a Jack clone. Shortly after moving, most of the 70s titles were exchanged for pre-Beatle tunes, changing the station back to what it sounded like musically before last year. In the process, they dropped all but the morning and afternoon drives plus evenings and a local specialty show on weekends. Hopefully, they will restore the midday show soon. It's great to hear 40+ year old jingles again occasionally!

Oh, the station that has not shown up in the local book since Spring of 2001, and bills $4,000 gross dollars a month?

Sure makes me want to expand my playlists.

WWLG 1370 am in Baltimore. Seems to be mostly local ads. Sounds like they added a number of 70s tunes after WQSR flipped. Much prefer them to WBIG here in Northern VA.

Pre-1964

Sad to say, a relatively small number of people listen to all these (mostly AM) stations being discussed down this thread. WLNG does well in the ratings, but I'm afraid the others are and will suffer from a malady many here aren't considering: most people who love Oldies(or any music) will not give an AM much listening time. They're accustomed to hearing in FM stereo, on CD and some satellite- if Oldies on AM was going to be that big a deal (listeners and revenue) it would be happening in many of the markets where Oldies have been dumped from FM in the past year.

It's nice recognizing these few stations, but let's not fool ourselves into believing they may save the Oldies format on the radio.

(but that being said, it sure is cool to us radio freaks hearing Top 40 on AM!)

Well, they may save it--as in, it may be THE place to hear the format in the coming years (that and non-comms), but as for the commercial success, probably not.

I agree. But I say, if you're gonna do it and don't give a damn, go all out! Get Johnny mann jingles, or PAMS, or TM, or CRC (!), hire (or teach) jocks to be Swingin' Gentlemen, or Boss Jocks, or Good Guys, or 11-10 Men, or Supermen, or what-have-you. HAVE FUN WITH IT! Contests (for trade, of course). Slogans.

Buy a billboard.

Truck-O-Luck.

The possibilities are endless.

I agree with the CD/satellite part. But most pre-1964 music was recorded in mono. "Real" oldies sound just fine on AM and if they can't survive there, then AM is dead.
