Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

I would try to apply this to those currently in this category, but you might want to throw in some past ones.

And now, a couple of examples, mind you...

>> XETV in San Diego/Tijuana (former ABC, now CW)

>> WTTV in Bloomington/Indianapolis (former NBC, now CW)

>> KRON in San Francisco (former NBC, now My Network TV)

>> WGN in Chicago (former CBS, now CW)

>> WTVW in Evansville (former ABC, now CW)

There was close to 4 decades of independence, plus one year of ABC before and a few years of UPN & WB after, between WTTV's time with NBC and their current affiliation with the CW.

>> WGN in Chicago (former CBS, now CW)

They were the primary Dumont affiliate, with CBS split between them and WBKB. Again, there was 4 decades of independence between the Dumont and WB affiliations.

>> WTVW in Evansville (former ABC, now CW)

WTVW was a Fox affiliate for many years, plus two years as an indie, between ABC and CW.

Was an indie from early 70s until the start of FOX, then to CW

You can also add KTVK in Phoenix, was ABC until 1995 became a WB station for a few months before WB61/WB6/CW6 went on the air.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

WRDC Raleigh/Durham, former NBC affiliate. After NBC bought
WNCN (now owned by Media General), WRDC went to UPN, then
to MyNetwork.

WJXT-TV channel 4 of Jacksonville hasn't been mentioned yet. They were CBS for many years. I believe they're independent now. Today, CBS for that market is WTEV-TV channel 47.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

Oh, here we go again! WJNL-TV/19 in Johnstown, PA. They were CBS for many years(dating back to the 1950's as WARD-TV/56), then went indie in the 80's as WFAT, then signed off for five years before coming back as WB station WTWB-TV. After that, they were Pittsburgh UPN station WNPA, and now they are WPCW, a CBS-owned CW station!

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

WCCB went from ABC to independent to Fox to CW.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

For a short time in the late '90s/early 2000s, between its ABC and NBC affiliations, KNTV in the Bay Area was a secondary affiliate of the WB(it was then owned by the same company that owned the primary affiliate, then-KBWB, now KOFY).

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

KTNT/KSTW Tacoma-Seattle:

CBS (1953-1958)
Independent (1958-1960)
CBS (1960-1962)
Independent (1962-1995)
CBS (1995-1997)
UPN/The CW (1997-present)

WJKS Channel 17 in Jacksonville, Florida switched from ABC to WB in 1996 (and eventually changed call letters to WJWB). Now they're Jacksonville's CW affiliate WCWJ.

Though for a time during the 1980s, they were affiliated with NBC.

Actually, they went from being an ABC affiliate to a Fox affiliate in 1996 (ABC is of course now on a subchannel of WGXA).

My Network TV is seen on a subchannel of WMGT, the area NBC affiliate.

Unless you originally meant Macon's WPGA-TV. That station started as a Fox affiliate in 1995, then lost Fox to WGXA in 1996. WPGA picked up ABC in 1996, only to have a falling out between the network and the station owner that lead to the stations' disaffiliation in 2010. Today it's an independent with MeTV and BounceTV on subchannels.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

WNHT channel 21 in Concord, N.H. was a CBS affiliate, briefly, in the late 1980s before going dark. It was resuscitated as a satellite of Boston's channel 68, then run as indie WABU-TV by Boston University; it's now an Ion station as WPXG.

WUVN channel 18 in Hartford, now Univision, is the descendant of WHCT, which was a CBS O&O in the 1950s.

I suppose you could count WNED-TV 17 in Buffalo; its license is the descendant of NBC O&O WBUF-TV 17 from the 1950s.

KVOS-TV 12 in Bellingham, Washington is now with MeTV, but was a CBS affiliate for many years.

And WVTV 18 in Milwaukee, now CW, is the descendant of the old WXIX-TV, also a CBS O&O in the 1950s.

One of the best examples is WAKR/23 (later WAKC) in Akron, Ohio, which was an ABC affiliate from its opening in the 1950s until 1996 when it was bought by Bud Paxson. It aired infomercials for a couple of years then as WVPX it joined the PAX network (now ION Television).

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other PAX/ION affiliates that used to be "big 3" stations.

WNAL in Gadsden, Alabama was briefly a CBS affiliate in the mid-'90s for the now-defunct Anniston/Gadsden TV market, before being sold to Paxson and becoming the PAX (now ION) affiliate for the Birmingham market as WPXH.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

WRDC in Raleigh went from NBC to UPN in 1995 (they're now MyNet).

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

Never mind, someone already pointed out WRDC. My apologies.

Re: Stations that went from a "Big 3" affiliate to a CW or lesser network affiliate

Florence, Alabama --

WOWL Channel 15 .... NBC affil (secondary CBS) from 1957 until 2000.

Now WHDF, "The Valley's CW", from a taller tower closer to Huntsville and Decatur.

WLYH/Channel 15 in Lebanon, PA was one of three (!) CBS affiliates for the Harrisburg/York/Lancaster DMA back in the day; they're now a CW station, but had been a UPN affiliate prior.
