Stations that won't be around this time next year.

I can't speak as to the Planet or Magic. But Rock 93.5 is not irretreivably broken, it does need some work and refocusing. IMHO, if I were programming Alt/Rock in SC, I'd be looking at WYBB in Charleston for guidance. They had a great book and the Wave is still wandering between AAA and Alt Rock. But the Alternative Hard Rock thing is clearly over with. The current product is just not that compelling to listen to. The Exies? Please. To survive, many of the Alt Rock stations will have to slide back over to a pretty mainstream AOR mix of music, with the AC/DC's, Van Halens, etc. That's pretty much where WARQ started back in 1992.

I don't think Columbia could stand yet another Urban or country station.

Hmmm.. what's the rationale? Planet maybe. Magic 98.9? It's hard to imagine Entercom leavings Clear Channel with the market's only AC.<P ID="signature">______________

96 Wave is a great radio station, whatever you want to term the format, I like it. It appeals to people who love alternative music and I applaud them for having a unique sound.

I agree that it is a unique station. But the Wave isn't what it once was and has had ##'s problems lately... for the first time in decades perennial underdog 98Rock is ahead in the 12+ beauty contest.. after years of pulling a 1.8 12+. To be sure, part of the problem for Wave is that WALC and WRFQ pull just enough audience away to knock the Wave down in the rankers. My only thought was that Wave would probably do well to lean more on the triple AAA side of things than try to straddle the fence as "Charleston's Rock Station." Just judging from the numbers, WYBB has a better sense of what the youth-oriented rock market wants.

WYBB had a great book! But it does seem that most of the #'s were Howard. My question is will just playing Slipknot records alone be enough to keep those #'s? Outside of Howard there isn't a lot going on. I think that SSX and WAVE are really good balanced stations with some very jocks. RFQ is good musically but I have heard EBS messages with more personality. WE'll see where YBB is in the post Howard world.

I don't know about the Howard issue. It's a toss-up. Maybe he really caught on in Charleston on WYBB, just by the nature of chaning times. He certainly was not burning up the road when he was on the Wave. Wrong station? Wrong timing?

I have looked at a lot of WYBB's playlists. They are certainly more than Slipknot. But they sure do rock harder than they Wave does. My impression is that YBB seems to have caught onto whatever direction the tide seems to be changing to. In the rock world, you can never go wrong with mixing in AC/DC, Van Halen, Zeppplin, etc.

WRFQ has more personality now than when it was WJUK Jukebox 104.5. But that sho ain't sayin' much :)

95SX is really impressive and really major market sounding. Reminds me of the old Q107 in that regard.

Back to the Wave, aside from the changig landscape, the Wave's second problem is that Dave Rossi is playing a lot of secondary and tertiary tracks from library artists. Maybe he knows something I don't, but I can't see playing obscure tracks from The Clash and the like really helps with the numbers. Sure, it's cool, but maybe its too cool for the room...

I think in Greenville 93.3 Planet and 96.7 The Buzzard will be gone. Especially the "Buzzard." They're headed NOWHERE.

Can't say much about the Walk, Oldies, or the 103's. Too soon TO tell anything, yet.

I don't think that what the mid day guy plays will make or break that station. The morning show is pretty good, afternoons are great. I listen to 99x in Atlanta and I think the WAVE is way better. It seems like more alternatives or at least the ones in the south should sound more like WAVE. In case you haven't noticed there has been a huge increase in most Stern stations surrounding his future departure. It is sad that most stations won't be able to take advantage of this huge spike in listeners. I don't think WAVE is too cool for the room, I do think however they are coolest in town.

Sure, it's hard to imagine, but looking at where they've been & where they're headed, I can't help but think something has to give.

They allow CC to dominate the country market, and Cox to dominate the urban side. Can't see much differnce.

For Charleston, I would like to see The Drive @100.5 & The Bridge 105.5 outta here.

Hopefully we can get an Urban or CHR Rhythmic format out one of them.

Yeah, it's time to crank up a new hip-hop party station in Chucktown!
