Stations with redundant signals/mostly useless translators (Or the other way around..

It will vary by radio, but by Wharton (almost 60 miles south of Houston), there is a fair amount of interference from KLUB. This is on a truck radio: a home based radio probably would carry 106.9 a much shorter distance.

106.9 puts a good signal to the east into Beaumont, but towards the west, both 106.9 and 107.5 begin a fairly rapid fade at Columbus (72 road miles from downtown Houston).

Houston is very flat, but 107.5 's antenna (KGLK) is located in Liverpool (30+ miles south of Houston): KHPT (106.9) has their tower near Splendora (40 miles or so NE of Houston.

During intense tropo, KGLK can face interference from KXTN (San Antonio) north of Houston (Kingwood, Spring, etc).

KHPT can battle KLUB from Victoria (not a bad Classic Rock station); to the south.

Given the size of Metro Houston, both stations have areas of spotty reception. The simulcast also helped "The Eagle" topple "The Arrow" which was the incumbent Classic Rock/Classic Hits station whose antenna is at the Missouri City antenna farm.

My guess is the simulcast and subsequent coverage may also be "insurance" against a challenge from a "Missouri City stick". The simulcast ratings are looking pretty good these days as well: I believe #2 in the 6 plus.

I remember hearing occasional tropo on 106.9 when I lived on the League City/Friendswood border some years back. That's a haul to 106.9's tower, but the signal was usually very good.
Strangely, 89.7 from Alvin, just down the road from my house, usually encountered co-channel interference right around the 45-Bay Area Blvd. interchange. It was enough to make the signal choppy, if only for a mile or so before the signal returned to local-grade strength. Usually was able to get a listenable signal from KACC all the way out to Missouri City and as far north as Kingwood.
