Stations You Would Change If you Owned Them

JeeperOne

Banned
This could be a format change, format consolidation/merger, tweaking of an existing format, expansion of an existing format, WHATEVER !! Use your imagination

If I owned a bunch of stations here in the Denver area, here's what I would do (Note that stations I don't mention are stations I would leave alone)

AM

KKZN 760 - Move current format to 103.5 FM & pick up ALL of KOA's current Talk programming

KOA 850 - Move talk programming to 760 & become a 24/7 All-News station (Ala WINS)

KCKK 1510 (And 93.7 FM) - Move ALL current programming to a newly launched FM stick on 97.9 & replace with satellite fed Sports Byline USA or another network like it

KEPN 1600 - Pick either NBC Sports Network or CBS Sports Network & affiliate with that network (Whichever one not chosen would move, along with the little local programming currently aired on 1600, to 107.5)

Radio Disney 1690 - Either move to (Or simulcast with) 93.7 (Radio Disney would replace current programming from KCKK upon moving to full-powered 97.9 FM)

FM

87.7 The FCC needs to decide ONCE & FOR ALL what will be done with this frequency as well as other old broadcast TV spectrum to the left of (Or lower than on the LED) it

93.7 See Radio Disney 1690

KBCO 97.3 - Merge the format with that of 103.5 since doing so wouldn't have ANY affect whatsoever & both stations play the same music anyway. Plus the station wouldn't lose it's World Class Rock touch & feel either

97.9 - See KCKK 1510 (And 93.7 FM)

KIMN 100.3 Flip the format to a more Top 40/CHR style of format since KIMN's heritage was ALL ABOUT bringing Top 40 music & radio to Denver & it would make for better competition for Party 95.7 than it is currently for Alice 105.9 It could also rebranded as The NEW Best Show In Denver (With the word "New" being removed once it's no longer new) More on KIMN & its history later

KRFX 103.5 See KBCO 97.3 & KKZN 760 (Becoming Progressive Talker 103.5 The Zone sporting the legal ID of KKZN-FM 103.5)

KALC 105.9 Bring back the hard edge that made this station so great back in the '90s

KBPI 106.7 This station no longer "Rocks The Rockies" in its present form. Therefore, it would become the proverbial "Test Tube" of a hybrid Rock/Talk format which would play Rock music like it currently does BUT it would also feature talk programming similar to (And that made) the "Hot Talk" format all the rave. It would be the new home of Howard Stern's show as well as other raunchy shows like this one & this one (The aforementioned shows used only as examples)

KQKS 107.5 Drop the current format. Beyond that, see KEPN 1600

MORE ON KIMN

Back in the day, KIMN RULED THE ROOST in Denver Radio. NOBODY could beat them back in the 1960s. In fact, it wasn't until the 1970s when then Beautiful Music/MOR station KOSI 101.1 began to claim the top spot (Which it did exclusively for years & still does non-exclusively to this day). KIMN was also THE HOME of Top 40 Radio in Denver. If the song was somewhere in the Top 40 on the charts, it was on KIMN here in Denver

I'll spare everyone here the trip down memory lane for those in the know as well as the history of KIMN for those who weren't as fortunate as I was to catch a part of KIMN when it was on 950 in Denver (Afterall, that's what The KIMN Tribute Website is for ;D ). But needless to say, this has become lost on those who've used the call on 100.3 (Which BTW, when it was known as KMJI, proved to be KIMN's Kryptonite when KIMN was on 950 back in the 80s). Instead of being a Top 40 station like the original KIMN, this version of KIMN has taken on an identity I can't even begin to describe as ANYTHING BUT corporate. To them, KIMN is just another station towing the company line. Just another asset to them

But to the people of Denver, KIMN is A LOT more than that - And the ratings prove it. People don't like the cookie cutter format that currently exists on there. Afterall, why does Wilkes think Alice 105.9 is so neck & neck with them? Wilkes has a chance to change KIMN & deliver a knockout punch to Alice by converting it to what made KIMN so famous back in the day. Yet they're NOT delivering that punch

Well anyway.....Those are my ideas for changes to the Denver stations if I owned them. What are the changed you'd make to YOUR local stations? Let's have some F-U-N with this (Emphasis on the word FUN here please peoples)

Cheers & 73 ;D

Any of them.

How could you own a station and not want to play with it?

It's like the ultimate toy!
Well yeah that's true ;D

But the whole idea behind this is to come up with ideas for struggling stations or stations whose audience is either turning to other stations, other forms of entertainment or whatever by taking (Sometimes) a completely radical approach to re-programming them for newer & perhaps younger audiences (Look at all the Comedy stations popping up as an example)

Cheers & 73 ;D

Now, as an extension of my original post, I'm now going to expand on that further by adding where I would put the local sports teams if I had their broadcast rights.....

PROFESSIONAL

Denver Broncos - 102.3 (No secondary)
Denver Nuggets - 104.3 (No secondary)
Colorado Avalanche - 97.9 (No secondary)
Colorado Rapids - 97.9 (Primary) 1600 (Secondary)
Colorado Rockies - 102.3 (Primary) 107.5 (1st Secondary) 104.3 (2nd Secondary)

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

CU Buffs - 102.3 (Primary) 104.3 (1st Secondary) 103.5 (2nd Secondary)
CSU Rams - 107.5 (No secondary)
Air Force Falcons - 104.3 (No secondary)

MENS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

CU Buffs - 103.5 (No secondary)
CSU Rams - 107.5 (No secondary)

Where would you put the popular sports teams in your neck of the woods?

Cheers & 73 ;D

Ham Radio lingo for "Greetings". There are quite a few Hams here. We also have a (Albeit sparsely used) Ham Radio board here too ;D

In Seattle......

1090 KFNQ (DUMP the also-ran canned sports blabber format and bring back Progressive Talk)

Actually, I thought that "73" was specifically a signoff greeting. I worked in shortwave radio for many years, and many broadcasters indeed signed off by saying "73."

Sports Team Rights
Grand Rapids-Holland-Muskegon
General
Detroit Lions: 107.3
Detroit Pistons: 96.1
Detroit Red Wings: 107.3
Detroit Tigers: 96.9
University of Michigan: 106.9/1300
Michigan State University: 96.1
Grand Rapids Griffins: 106.9/1300
Grand Valley State: 107.9/1230
Conflicts
Lions get priority over Red Wings. Wings move to 96.9 if conflict.
Michigan State gets priority over Pistons. Pistons move to 101.3 if conflict.
U of M gets priority over Griffins. Griffins move to 101.3 if conflict.
In the rare event U-M or MSU conflicts with the Pistons and the Griffins, the Griffins would move to 93.7.
Ludington-Manistee
General
Detroit Lions: 98.7
Detroit Red Wings: 98.7
Detroit Tigers: 98.7
Green Bay Packers: 94.1
Michigan State University: 98.7
University of Michigan: 94.9
Grand Valley State: 106.3
No one cares about the Pistons outside of Detroit and Grand Rapids :)
Conflicts
94.1 is the overflow for any conflicts on 98.7 (except when Lions and Packers play at the same time, in which case overflows would move to 94.9)

More specifically, it was telegraphers short hand for goodbye. dah dah dit dit dit dit dit dit dah dah which was picked up later by voice operators much to the consternation of the CW purists!

Seattle to add to Bongwater's list,
101.5 keep the name and all staff and format, but re-image the thing with a different voice and use the imaging more often, not only play one lame sounder every 4 songs or so.
96.5 would probably stay the same, or maybe bring back the KYPT calls and format with the current format moving over to the hd2.
92.5 current format moves to 106.9 and 92.5 is relaunched as AC KLSY, bringing back the calls and format from the 1990s.
104.5 keep current format sorry guys, but the old oldies format put me to sleep! The current format stays the same with a call change and rebrand to 104.5 KBSG.
Sports teams,
Most of them would be kept where they are. The only change I would make is if the Mariners and Seahawks are playing at the same time, the Seahawks will only be heard on 97.3, not simulcast on 710 and 97.3. As a result, the Mariners would not get bumped to 770 unless the Sounders are playing at the same time as the other teams, which seems highly unlikely. If that were to happen, the Seahawks would be on 710, Mariners on 770, and the Sounders on 97.3.

For Yakima, I'd bring back the soft rock to 99.3. KQMY...oops, KIT-FM, has been news-talk the last couple years and no one in Yakima has added an AC format yet, unless you want to listen to a staticky KONA 105.3 from the Tri-Cities.

If i could get my hands on one station and change it, it would be to drop sports on 610 KILT here in Houston and flip it to 60's/70's classics hits as it originally was until 1981. The name returns, the old jingles, everything. I'd hire Chuck Tiller away from Salem to operate and program it. I'd like for my airstaff to be Ed Chandler, Rowdy Yates, Leslie T. Travis, Jim Carolla doing news breaks, and re-airs of classic AT 40's every Sunday morning. I mean what city really needs 5 sports stations anyway? (This is without concern for expense or advertising dollars, right?)
