Status of WABB-AM 1480

I have not heard any regular programming from WABB-AM today. The stormy weather must have interfered with their reception of syndicated programming such as "Doug Stephan's Good Day" and "The Laura Ingraham Show".

I wish I knew a way to contact someone currently involved with WABB-AM, since I have failed to contact someone by telephone since the operation of WABB-FM (now WLVM-FM) was taken over by the Educational Media Foundation on March 1st.

They have a Facebook page, but it appears to be gathering dust. The only recent activity is when I posted a question about cleaning up the glitches and sound quality, which has been deleted. ::)

^Your question was not deleted. Both the question and the response are still on the page. As for the station now, I hear no programming still.

Weird. I can't find it all when I go to their page. Must be a Facebook hiccup.

I expected the worst, of course, because when WJLQ flipped I know a comment or two of mine got canned from their wall.

As of this post, WABB-AM continues to broadcast without any programming.

On the air silence?

At the top of the post, right below the facebook photos, there's two options: "1480 AM WABB" and "Everyone (Top Posts)." Click on the "everyone" option and you will see your comment and the reply to it.

I hear programming again. Earlier I heard nothing and shortly after 1:00 PM there was nothing still.

EDIT: I hear nothing again. According to the station, there is some work to fix the problems since Friday.

Did anyone hear any programming besides CNN Radio programming, commercial advertisements, and station identification segments between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM today? I can hear programming now, but I could not check for programming shortly before 5:00 PM.

WABB-AM had problems broadcasting "The Michael Medved Show" today. Between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, audio of promotional advertisements for the Compass Media Networks and other advertisements were broadcast. As of this post I can hear "The Michael Medved Show" after a commercial break and a long period of no programming audio.

Gawd, are they just leaving the audio from whatever satellite feed they're using open all the time? They must have pulled the plug on the computers in the studio or something.

They might as well just shut it down and turn in the license if they're going to go about it all half-arsed.

Would they be a head financially if they filed an STA (temp. off air) and hope it sells in a year? I wonder how much more this station is worth on the air verses a STA shut down when the electric bill is considered. I know they want out of the business but they might be better off with a LMA to one of the local clusters or an individual* with a plan.

* I have a plan but can not relocate to South Alabama at this time. If someone can get the LMA or buys WABB contact me for "free" consulting. All I would charge would be a good reference.

Oldies!

I would suggest the station broadcasts production music from theatrical movies, TV programs, and video game with local announcers and a local owner in charge. If the station were to adopt such programming, it would be unlike any other station broadcasting within the range of radio listeners in Mobile.

If anyone in the Dittman clan has their thinking cap on, they'll find a few friendly appraisers to value the worthless SOB at a half-million-or-so and then donate WABB-AM to the University of South Alabama or Spring Hill College or the Mobile School District... and write it off their taxes.

But, yeah, you could slap True Oldies on it... or even dive into the Gospel Wars, since 1480 has a better 24-hour signal than 660 or 900 or 960--but that would require a war chest capable of outlasting the others, which would take years and years... for what? A tough slog for a small reward--and praying every night that an FM didn't come along and wipe you off the map anyway.

Nah, give it to a school--if they'll take it--and go for the tax break.

Didn't some other old (as in now dark) Mobile AM get donated or willed to Spring Hill and they refused to accept the gift?

I was serving on the Spring Hill College National Alumni Board in the late 80s. At that time, WABB AM was one of three applicants for a CP to move to 1160. At the time I was owner of WDLT 98.3. The Alumni Director of the school told me they had an informal discussion about donating 1480 to SHC if it were freed up by the move to 1160. The school did not seem interested at the time ... and I gave them my recommendation in no uncertain terms ... turn it down.

SHC just disposed of 91.3 and I understand the partial reasoning was that operation of that facility was a distraction from their primary mission. I would think an AM would be an even greater distraction.

Unless they could take the facility as a donation and then sell it off for a few bucks.

If WABF 1220 were interested, they could simulcast on 1480, and get some reach on the other side of the bay. They have in the past simulcasted on 1110 in Bay Minette and 1000 in Robertsdale. 1220 does fill a programming void in the area, and the volume of calls from Mobile on their Trading Post suggests the station does have some following across the bay.
