Status of WABB-AM 1480

poledo said:
Mario, you keep referring to WABB as the new member of The Ticket Sports Network which consists of "WTKE-FM and WTSP-FM."  You don't appear to have mentioned any of the AM members of our "Redneck Riviera Sports Talk Patchwork Network".

I know that WTKE-AM 1490 Milton-Pensacola was literally falling apart or maybe even fell down and is no longer simulcasting The Ticket Sports Network because a dark station in Milton can't broadcast OTA... but what about the other two Ticket Sports Network affiliates: WDSP 1280 in Defuniak Springs, FL and WPGG 1470 in Evergreen, AL?  Have they been mentioned at all in any of the press releases your basing your articles on?  Does anyone know what is happening or has happened with the rest of the AM side of The Ticket Sports Network?

Could Hale have wised up and sold off those rinky dink, haven't been relevant in over 30 years, probably have equipment over 50 years old (and are likely missing a significant amount of some copper that previous owners/contractors didn't leave behind for fear of it being stolen), radio stations buried in static on the AM band so no one even knows they even exist anymore?  All of Hale's AMs (as of August 1, 2012) should just go dark and turn in the license.  WABB isn't Hale's, yet.  Hale should sell the 94.3 translator in FWB to Cumulus and just stick with WTKE, WTSP, and Mobile's 1480.

/end rant.  I've been ranting far too much this month.  I think I'm becoming addicted.  Please help!

I only to the Ticket Sports Network as consisting of WTKE-FM, WTSP-FM, and WABB-AM because WABB-AM and WTKP-FM are the only stations at the moment meant to simulcast WTKE-FM. Just yesterday I heard a new station identification segment in which all three of those stations and their communities of license were mentioned.

Also, I've just got to critique your article again.  I had never even heard of the Mobile Examiner paper before you started posting links to articles here.  I don't know who the target audience reading that paper is, but you use big words that most folks reading the Mobile paper and many people on this board don't even understand. The terms "megacycles" and "unmodulated carriers" should never be used except in a high level trade magazine or possibly a college term paper.  If you find it absolutely necessary to use a term like those, you need to define it in the sentence following the term.  I bet the only person reading those articles who understood the words the first time he read them was Zach.... and maybe that musiconradio guy.  I got it, but I had to slow down and re-read the context to figure out what you wanted me to know.
I won't comment on the Examiner writing ever again Mario, but I felt you deserved some feedback.

Thank you for the feedback. I use those technical terms to help readers become familiar with them and become interested with them. I cannot expect other reporters to use those technical terms, so it is best that I use them to ensure others are familiar with them.

As for the most unusual of technical terms such as "unmodulated carriers", I explained them in previous articles.

Your readers don't care about learning new words. They will never understand . It's not worth trying to educate them. It may even cause common folks to stop reading your articles all together. Keep it simple when publishing to the mainstream. Use the technical terms when addressing people like the ones reading Radio-info and AVS forum, etc.
(I spent wasted 3 quarters attending the Grady college of journalism at the University of Georgia... they teach stuff like this.)

disclaimer: I am not a teacher.

And Mario, if I knew how to send this to you in a private message, I would. I hate posting this in public... just trying to help you in your budding news reporting career/hobby... oh, and to build up some brownie points with the moderator that is paying attention to what I post. ;D

Wow, I never though to listen to the TOH ID. Could have solved my own mystery. Now I wonder what ol' Hale is doing with WDSP and WPGG? They're probably dark now, just like WTKE-AM.

And then he has that pesky 97.1 translator up somewhere in the Walnut Hill (FL) area. What could he have up his sleeve for that beauty? Is he good enough to get the FCC to let him move it or will he wind up selling it to Clear Channel since they seem to be the only company the FCC allows to move translators now.....

Last time I heard WPGG it was doing sports talk, but it was from Yahoo Sports. So I guess it could be a simulcast of Hale's little sports network (not that I'm trying to belittle Hale's fledgling network) or it could have been off the bird direct to the station. I never heard anything to tell me one way or another.

Also, I don't find Mario-500's examiner.com posts to be too technical at all. Since he focuses on broadcast and TV radio, I expect the people interested in that to already know some of the terminology.

That said, I didn't think anyone under the age of 120 used "megacycles" any more. It's megahertz. ;D

^On page 16 of this discussion I had posted a link to my article with the same details.

Let me fix that statement for you:

12th story down WABB Am has been sold for $106,000 to the infamous Fort Walton Beach, Florida-based Omni Broadcasting.

He buys low, he moves, he sells high.  Everyone's pissed off in the end of every deal.  Right now I don't see how he could increase the value of any of his stations without FM translators... and he does own some dormant translators out in the middle of the woods.  I wonder if he's already got a lead on one of the silent Mobile area translators?
