Status of WZYP's morning show

Since Mojo left WZYP, the station has had to find a new morning show to replace Mojo. I had a chance to talk with the WZYP program director last Saturday at a local weather festival. He says that they would like to keep their morning show live and local with local talent. Currently, the station is runing jockless in the mornings with just music playing. The PD actually says their numbers have been fairly well with just music in the mornings.

I'm guessing the morning show that replaced Mojo earlier in the year didn't last? I don't listen to the station, so my awareness of the changes came from those segments with WAAY 31 morning news. I can't remember when I last saw one of those segments though.

Then again, I don't pay attention to that station in the mornings as much as I used to. I don't need to go further off-topic about local tv morning news in this thread so I stop now. ;)

I travel in that area throughout the week and always listen to WZYP in the mornings. The music-only format is light years ahead of Mojo and I have no doubt Steve Smith is seeing it reflected in the numbers. News, traffic and weather are still sprinkled throughout the clock, it's tight and it sounds good. Actually, WZYP's more conservative Adult CHR playlist is a perfect mix in AM drive. The only complaint I've got is the Friday Free for All or whatever it's called. Breaking format to play some really flat '80s titles throughout AM drive is always frustrating for me. Steve Smith is a great guy, though, I had the privilege of emailing back and forth with him a few times when he was still at Montgomery's Y102 and he was always a stand-up guy.

I have to agree about the Friday free for all 80s music. I can't stand it either! The Adult CHR format is ok for mornings but that same format continues throughout the day as well until about 6pm and that's not good. Huntsville/North Alabama is in dire need of a true full time CHR/Top 40 station because WZYP is NOT it (even though they promote themselves to be).

I did also suggest to the program director that WZYP add song titles from the mid to late 90s to their retro lunch lineup. Suprisingly, the PD did say they did throw that idea around the station. I was honest in saying that some of the songs played during the 80s Retro lunch are 30 years old.
