My first paying job in TV News was Harrisonburg, VA in 1982, then Market 195 or 200. Even then, I knew what not to say, and when not to say it.

Too bad we can't say the same for Mr Ortiz of the Red Sox. Late news shows last night speculated that the FCC probably wasn't interested in any penalties against him. Again, a trip to the corporate woodshed is all the consequence the Bismark anchor should have to pay.

Didn't surprise me that Letterman jumped on it. He brought that "Boom Goes the Dynamite" kid on his show (who worked at the TV station of Ball State, Letterman's alma mater).

AJ has tweeted that he was pre-reading a script, came across London Marathon winner Tsegaye Kebede's name, struggled with it and said the two words, not knowing the show had begun and his mic was open.

That created another unfortunate circumstance, since the control room cut the anchor's sound on right when A.J. was literally in the middle of pronouncing Tsegaye Kebede's name, so the first thing the audience hears come out his mouth is the latter part of the name, making it sound as if he said "gay" as a slur. He also clarified this during his appearance on Today, when Matt Lauer asked him about that part. http://www.today.com/video/today/51643104#51643104

To be fair, a name like "Tsegaye" would be hard for some people to pronounce (heck, my name is hard for some people to pronounce), he probably wasn't sure if it was supposed to be pronounced "se-gay", "see-gay", "se-guy-eh" (which sounds the more plausible pronunciation) or "see-guy-eh". He could still be seen looking down on the desk at his copy, trying to figure out how to pronounce Kebede's name as co-anchor Van Tieu was about to introduce him.
 
From his Today Show interview, he said he had no IFB, no floor director, and master control ran started the news 30 seconds early. I presume his co-anchor was also the producer. Using foul language so close to the top of the show is inexcusable, something terrible would have happened at some point under those circumstances.

Another reason why anchors start pre-reading their copy (and marking pronunciation) half an hour before air at their desks in the newsroom.

He'll learn. With public reaction, it's inevitable he'll be hired. And I love that the GM and ND who canned him have to carry the Today show on their air.
 
After this experience, you would think he'd be so paranoid about screwing up that he'd be the most careful person around a microphone, ever. I'd hire him.
 
Not only did KFYR have to deal with the Today Show interview, they also carry Kelly and Michael. Clemente will appear on that show this week too.

When I was in radio, I dropped the f-bomb and the s-word on-the-air when I was having mic troubles. I thought the mic was in audition only to look down and find it was in program after I said the offending words. I didn't hear a single word about it from anyone.

Unfortunately, the best way to learn the rule that every mic is hot at all times (even if the cord has been cut) is to do something like that!

...when I worked at KPHX/1480 Phoenix in '07, my producer dropped an f-bomb on my show. I didn't, he did. I was hoping the arrogant jackass would be canned for it, but the fool running the station then (who is now apparently Premiere's "executive producer" for Randi Rhodes' show) let it slide. Said fool went on to file a slander lawsuit against said arrogant jackass 18 months later...

Perspective R/D pen-pal, PERSPECTIVE. Yes, nobody would argue; on-air cussing is unacceptable, and is best left to the flop-house acts of second rate stand-up comics. But people make mistakes, even news anchors. I posted this link on Reply 45. I'm posting it again for you to see that the blooper of this "this no-talent foul-mouth newbie" actually ranks him on a list of some awfully prestigious company.
