They have been commercial free since they started. The plan is to eventually load the ads back into the show and then charge $5 a month for the non-commercial version.
I personally think that's stupid, considering advertisers aren't going to pay for podcasts - they are the radio ads just carried along. Bandwidth costs increase to send them down the pipe to the overwhelming majority who are not going to pay for the service, and then someone else will simply subscribe to the commercial-free version and then post it all over the net through torrents or newsgroups, making it free anyway.
A better answer is to find a specific sponsor for the podcast version and perhaps run an ad for them between each hour's show. People won't simply fast forward through the ads (which they will do if left intact) and they'll still get something out of the deal.
Podcasts are a great way to introduce new listeners to your show and allow older ones to catch up, and those who've never heard it to sample it. It's not a revenue stream, as Real continues to find out over their dismal subscription numbers.
