Stephanie Miller on Talk Decline

And putting him on a different station sold by the same people is going to solve that problem? Wrong answer.

You don't seem to understand the situation. Advertisers don't have a problem with Clear Channel or their sales staff. They have a problem with Rush. Rush, on the other hand, has replaced those advertisers with a lot of people who want to be in his show. So what CC has done is place Rush and his advertisers on one station, and kept their highly rated local talk on another, and that's also where they're putting ads by sponsors that don't want to be near Rush. UNDERSTAND?

So again, everyone wins. That was my original point. Both stations will probably make decent money.

Depends. Rush had a bigger audience on KFI. The station he's on now had no audience before. They have something now, but Rush has taken a net audience hit.

He wasn't exactly burning things up on KFI either. The coasts are pretty much an afterthought for Rush and similar shows these days.

People said the same thing last time. He'll hang on until he can't physically do it anymore.
The format has only recently gotten to the point that there doesn't appear to be any light at the end of the tunnel. By the time, it's time for him to renew again, I don't think he'll be considered worth the extra money anymore. I expect a lot more station changes in the meantime.

Again, the same thing has been said for the past 20 years. It's wishful thinking.

What are they going to change AM talk stations to? Death metal polka?

They don't need to change a thing. They have LOTS of successful local talk shows. As evidenced by KFI. But also WLW, WHAM, and dozens more. They've invested a lot in WOR, and perhaps at some point, they'll discover "the next Rush." They're doing a pretty intense search now for a morning show.

Rush is Premiere's problem. He's old and expensive. The rest of the company has better things to do.

But they're still making lots of money. They could put you in Rush's slot, and I'm confident it would do just fine.

I wouldn't mind waking up 4 hours later, but I wouldn't like doing nothing but national stuff. It gets old fast. I need local guests and such to break things up.

Of course for $80 million a year, I'd talk about soccer 20 hours a week.

I've worked at 3 large market Rush stations and 1 major market Rush station. One was in the west, 1 in the midwest and 2 in the northeast. There is ONE consistent thread that runs through all of those stations: When Limbaugh is interrupted or bumped, the audience goes nuts. I mean NUTS. You'd think that you'd killed their puppy.

As critical as I can be or Limbaugh, I have no delusion about the ridiculous loyalty of his still-large audience. No offense to "small market guy", but if there is any list of suitable replacements for Rush, it is extremely short and probably pointless. Think: Stern leaving OTA radio.

I think when Rush is replaced it will be with 3 or 4 regional guys who do similar shows. Like the record industry, I don't think radio companies want one guy to have that much pull.

And don't worry about offending me. I know I would never replace Rush. Even if people do call and worry when I take a day off. I had to go to the dentist for an emergency a few months back and people thought I got fired. I can't imagine what they're going to do when I take a week and a half off in June.
