stephen a. smith

I don't know how else to put this.

But its just awful. I mean gawd awful.

Its the biggest middle finger that FSR has given to its affiliates since The Soup. Its an even bigger middle finger than Van Earl Wright.

Well I turned on Stephen A this morning and he said "I know its the beginning of the NFL playoffs but I gotta talk about Gilbert Arenas" so I switched over to Mike and Mike.. They were talking NFL... Thats where I kept the dial

Right on, brother!

I could not have said this better myself. I would be fascinated to see the actual dollar and cents reasoning behind this move at Fox, as I am certainly not a target demographic for this switch. Smith is a radio shlumpadink to me, but obviously has interest, even on this thread.

I'm the program coordinator of an FSR afflilate and every listener email I've received in the last three days are negative, and promising to listen elsewhere.

Thank you FSR for destroying what morning drive numbers we had!

thats because S.A.S is an NBA guy, first and foremost

I listened for about 5 minutes and remembered that show what was it? quite frankly? quite frankly I want my Czaban show back!!! I boycotted the mornings. I will continue to hope Czabe can return to national air. Insanity that Czabe is gone and SAS, JT and a few other clowns continue to be on my radio.

SAS will last as long as Leno lasts at 10PM for NBC TV

Premiere is confident Smith will get them cleared in Philadelphia and New York City, so unless you're a major market station, they'll probably consider it worth the risk to shed some smaller stations.

Man...New York and Philadelphia are nasty places to live. Who cares if you clear those markets. The Sunbelt is where its at.

And the Arenas situation is more newsworthy. The NFL playoffs happen every year--it's unavoidable that any host would talk about them eventually. An NBA diva potentially breaking federal gun laws for a practical joke? That certainly doesn't happen everyday, not counting the obvious stereotyping by half-bigoted sports morons.

I always liked Stephen A's show on ESPN radio - but -and this is a big but - I listened maybe one day a week, and his show only had to last one hour!

I've not taken the chance to listen to him on FSR yet.

I try to be as objective as possible with anyone/any show. I know I want the same luxury afforded to me whenever I do some type of work as well. I will admit I couldn't stand Steven A. Smith on ESPN/ESPN Radio, but I wanted to give his show a couple weeks so I have been listening as much as I can to give a fair assessment... to sum it up properly: HORRIBLE.

While I certainly haven't heard every minute of every show, I have only heard one segment about the NFL this week. Potentially one of the greatest games in NFL Playoff history occurred last Sunday and it was barely discussed (I listened to nearly the entire show Monday), so then what was discussed? THE NBA--with the primary emphasis being Gilbert Arenas--really? We're still discussing this issue? It happened weeks ago, I could sum up the topic in a few sentences, "He broke the law and now faces a maximum of five years in jail. This move could cost him eighty million dollars, what an idiot! That's all" Instead, we're hearing endless banter from Derek Fisher about the player's union and their response--to which they say "well, we're going to wait for an investigation" ...but segment after segment is spent on this issue. Occasionally Steven A. Smith throws everyone a bone and talks about Kobe Bryant for awhile--this certainly doesn't help the image that Fox Sports Radio is very LA-centric in their focus on sports.

I did hear a couple of segments about college football/Pete Caroll/Lane Kiffin/USC and minority hiring in the NFL... certainly news worthy but devoting the vast majority of your show to the NBA in January is kinda silly... particularly when you consider that the NBA is the 3rd most popular sport behind #1 football and #2 baseball in the U.S. (Or the NBA is #4 if you actually consider NASCAR a sport). In any event, this is one dynamic in which the Steven A. Smith show is a disaster--terrible discussion material.

Not much show prep either, it sounds like much of what is done is just rip-and-read with not a lot of investigating done by someone that has plenty of resources at his disposal to do so.

..and why have co-hosts if you wish to monopolize the conversation? Of course, when he does talk to his co-host is nothing but flirting anyway... this morning I thought he was going to ask Deb Carson (filling in for Eddie Garcia on updates) to sleep with him... could you attempt to be professional? ...and no, I'm not some prude or uptight person at all, I listen to Howard Stern and find him to be a pioneer of the industry, but each type of show/format has it's parameters. When I listen to sports talk, I generally want to hear about... sports--relevant to the time as well. In that vein it is almost impossble to hear MLB news on Fox Sports Radio this time of year, and forget about Hockey.

If Fox Sports Radio branded Steven A. Smith's show as "Around the NBA with Steven A. Smith" or something to that effect, then sure, the show would be quasi-acceptable (although still small/mid market sounding), but as it is now this show is a regrettable waste of the electro-magnetic spectrum.

Its so so bad. And I don't even mean just talking NBA... the show is JUST bad. Seriously.
On his twitter account he claimed to be getting rave reviews... from deaf people? Its just a bad show.

I agree with you KMGX, if you have an hour a week and its around the NBA with S.A.S then thats interesting. But if I have to hear, "I love the ladies" one more time... thanks Stephen we get it. You love the ladies.

Here is the deal though. Its not going anywhere... and for PD's of smaller markets or even NON-L.A. markets, we're essentially F'd in the A

KMGX - good post - thanks.

agree on almost all fronts. today (friday 1/15) was really terrible.

unless fsr pulls the plug, i guess this means more mornings of podcasts and npr.

unhappy face.

You showed exactly how knowledgeable you are by trying to portend the NBA as the fourth most popular sport in America--behind NECKcar. You are truly a laugh riot.

Actually Nate, I said the NBA is the 3rd most popular sport (number four if you count NASCAR), either way you look at it, don't take my word for it, look at the TV ratings... the 2009 NBA finals drew a 5.4 average share, the world series was nearly a 10 share and the Superbowl... well... we all know football in the U.S. is king. Stephan A. Smith is certainly allowed to discuss the NBA on his show--I don't think anyone is taking issue with that, it is the amount of time devoted to a single story that seems to be an issue. Moreover, ratings would indicate that the regular season in the NBA is a luke-warm interest with the vast majority of fans... therefore devoting such an extended amount of time to something that has limited interest is something that doesn't make a lot of sense... but in my post that wasn't my only issue with Stephan A. Smith... the overall presentation is lacking, the overwhelming amount of negative feedback generated to Program Directors across the country seems to speak for itself. Affiliates are not happy with what they have been given.

If you're a fan of the show, that is wonderful, however I know a few PD's in the biz that are absolutely disgusted at what this has done to their stations morning lineups. Here in Phoenix the show is aired from 4-7am in standard time and 3-6am during Daylight Saving time... so it's in a relatively irrelevant part of the day ratings wise... but why give people an excuse to tune elsewhere?

I would offer a sports show to anyone that wants it for $1 (since doing it for free would be illegal) if they're interested... anything to get that show off of your airwaves :).
