Stephen A Smith

Anyone have the scoop on the ending of his show(s)? Even though his show is finished, the program schedule hasn't been updated until Thursday, when ESPN 710 LA will apparently pick up the network feed. He also seems to be off the schedule on ESPN 1050 NY as of Friday, where Ryan Ruocco is now listed with a new partner. He seemed to be okay with the change at least publicly, which he implied was ESPN's call and staying on, presumably as a pundit on other people's shows. Sounds like they're honoring his contract at least. It's a shame, he's one of the most listenable guys in sports radio, much more than some who still have a show.

Ryan Ruocco's new partner on ESPN Radio NY (WEPN) is...Stephen A. Smith! from 1-3pm ET on 1050 AM and new as of Mon. 4/30 on 98.7 FM (simulcast for now; the AM becomes ESPN Deportes in September 2012). Higher profile slot for Smith where he won't get bumped for game broadcasts. Ruocco's former partner Robin Lundberg is now doing weekend morning shows on ESPN Radio NY.

Stephen A. will continue to appear on the various ESPN platforms. It makes sense that he's giving up the L.A. show; it was convenient when it immediately followed his (now former) NYC evening show (7-9pm ET/4-6pm PT). Now, not so much.

The 98.7 FM ESPN simulcast replaces legendary New York RnB / Urban AC station WRKS "98.7 KissFM" which was owned by cash-strapped Emmis Communications. Emmis is LMA'ing the 98.7 frequency to ESPN Radio. More details on the New York City radio boards/forums.

Hmmm, Lundberg is still listed on Friday though, with Mike Lupica in a different timeslot. Will assume they screwed up and didn't update the Friday schedule yet. Too bad for Lundberg, radio is a tough biz. Wonder who ESPN will give the LA slot to? The In The Zone show was entertaining with the team of A Martinez and Brian Long, but it's just not the same with Martinez by himself and can't see them giving it a timeslot which partially overlaps afternoon drive. Could a call to The Big Nasty be on anyone's mind?
