Stephen colbert

I think it's a great decision. It really changes the landscape. Craig is really best at 12:30. It's hard to position yourself the way he has, and then become Mr. Establishment. People just won't buy it. Some people had problems when Dave switched from sweaters and basketball shoes to double-breasted suits. But it was something he had to do. If Craig gets rid of all that makes him unique, he's no longer unique. Colbert doesn't have that problem. He's a character. Which is perfect for what he's going to do. And it's very different from the other 11:30 options.

What would be fun about watching someone struggle to master a whole different kind of show?

It doesn't have to be a different kind of show. Take a look at what Jimmy Fallon has done with Tonight. He's really adapted the show to fit his talents. I'd expect the producers who work with Colbert are looking for ways to adapt what he does for the role he'll be playing. He's an actor. It worked for Fernwood Tonight. Another similar idea might have been Martin Short, but he's a bit past his prime.

Don't forget that Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin came out of game shows (Carson with "Who Do You Trust?" and Griffin with "Play Your Hunch," even though Carson's show was as much talk as game) but learned the ad-libbing skills necessary to do a talk show. Colbert doesn't come out of games but there's no reason he can't work an ad-lib format.

I'm not a late-night viewer but I was a little surprised Craig Ferguson didn't get Letterman's slot (perhaps because I'm thinking of how Jimmy Fallon was moved up an hour to replace Leno), but if Colbert does put a different spin on the late-night talk-show format he might be worth a look-see.

It was a surprising move, and one that wasn't expected. I will admit that I thought he Carig Ferguson would have had the job. In my opinion, it's probably that he didn't want the job. No worries for him, he gets a $5 million check from CBS. There are some questions to consider with Stephen Colbert taking over the "Late Show:"

1. Will we see the Stephen Colbert we know now, which is a character/parody of a talk show host, or will this be Stephen Colbert 2.0?
2. When will the transition take place, and how will it be handled?
3. Will the "Late Show" continue from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York or Television City in Los Angeles?

So many questions, and armchair quarterbacking to come. Stay tuned.

This has all ready been answered, the Stephen Colbert character isn't coming along.

Also it appears CBS has had their eye on Colbert for at least a year and approached him shortly before Dave extended his contract through 2015. It wasn't set in stone yet but a gentleman's agreement was shook upon. Craig Ferguson was never really an option CBS was exploring but he's getting a nice payout so he's happy. Whether Craig stays or goes is entirely up to him. I like to think he enjoys his little playhouse at 12:35am and if he wants to continue he will or he'll pursue other options (especially if his gameshow takes off next season). Craig has always gone on record saying he'll hang it up when Dave does and has no interest in being the next heir apparent to The Late Show. I hope he hangs around because he is certainly has the most unique show even if it's not the most popular. I don't think Craig cares either way, he just wants to go out there and be silly on his own terms with little to zero cage rattling from the brass in the stuffed suits.

Craig *does* have the most unique of the late night talk shows. Shame he's on very late, I hardly get to watch him since it's on at 12:37.
Geoff, Secretariat the Horse and his puppets are absolutely hilarious. Late night doesn't have to just be jokes about Obama, Oprah, and Kim Kardashian.

Fortunately, some of Craig's best interviews are available on YouTube.
