Stephens purchases Edge/KTSO?

I doubt they'd ditch the Edge. They run an alt rocker in Rochester (The Zone) and when they bought that set of stations, no formats changed.

Good to know they already have one and didn't kill it. With that being said I think some of the Z staffer freedoms will be diminished. Since Z was owned by a company that owned papers, spending a little money to make money was the "norm". The new bunch has a reputation of being CHEAP. We shall see....

There's a strong rumor that it's happening, but no one seems to be able to confirm it. If anything changes, it'll be 94.1 to an AC format.

It is not a done deal yet, but it looks like it will happen. Bob Thornton told a mutual friend that the goal would be to put KXOJ on 94.1 and move KTSO to 100.9. That would give it a full market signal. They will probably leave the Edge alone for now. The Sports Animal is another factor. They could put that on 104.5 or on the 94.5 translator. The KXOJ sales staff is on the street talking about the deal like it has closed. The Shamrock guys are cheap operators and look like they want out of Tulsa. Either way, this is going to once again take one more company out of the market. Perry is the sole survivor! KXOJ on a real signal may help guard against KLove putting up a real station in the Metro.

The way I hear it, K-Love has actually refrained from going into Tulsa itself with a full-blown signal to not step on KXOJ. The 103.7 signal is more intended by EMF for the benifit of the rual area it covers than trying to intentially grab Tulsa audience. The EMF folks are really a lot nicer than many others think they might be....

Judging from web registrations, that's not happening. 94.1 appears to be going AC as "Lite FM." Since KXOJ has registered a domain for "Lite FM Tulsa" in addition to "94.1 Lite FM," I suppose it's possible AC will go to 100.9 instead. However, that doesn't really make much sense. KXOJ does very well on 100.9, and there's no other format you could put there that could match it. Moving KXOJ to 94.1 wouldn't likely increase it's audience by much, and putting AC on 100.9 will only assure that it will never take off. Although Stephens doesn't sell the numbers, I can't imagine you'd get much buy-in from advertisers for an AC format on a class A signal in Creek County that has poor building penetration downtown and east.

Why cant KXOJ rebrand as Lite FM on 94.1? I know the KXOJ calls have major heritage but it could stay part of the brand but go by the simpler LIte FM.

I suppose that can't be ruled out, though it seems strange. After all, why would you get rid of a brand that not only has heritage but has been successful? Also, it fails to explain what would be done with 100.9. I don't see how you could put anything else on that signal and have anywhere near the success of the Christian format.

Bob Thornton of KXOJ used to read these boards with at least some frequency. I can't help but wonder if he's reading this thread and chuckling just a little. He's definitely got something up his sleeve, but it's hard to say exactly what it is!

Has this been filed with the FCC?

If KXOJ goes to 94.1, it will do better and the revenue potential will increase as a full Tulsa signal with actual building penetration. The people will follow that format to another frequency. They are used to being told what to do anyway. :D

The new billboards are already: WWJD? Switch his radio to 94.1

So far, I can't find any proof of this deal. It's not to say it's not going to happen but I think certain sites have jumped the gun without the proof in hand.

I think it would be a perfect fit to put the sports animal on 100.9. KXOJ on 104.5 and light AC on 94.1.

If KXOJ's sees their main mission in Tulsa is to have a christian AC format I would think they would want the best possible signal for it. And in selling 94.5, and 100.7 KXOJ is losing area's to the east that I would think they would need 104.5 to make up those areas. Otherwise I do not think they would be selling 100.7 and 94.5 if they do not have a plan for a better signal in those areas for KXOJ.

So is their purpose in buying 104.5 and 94.1 to get a better signal for KXOJ for their mission and more listeners for KXOJ or to just program a couple more non-religious stations for their business.

If KXOJ does not care about building penetration and area's to the east then that should leave an opportunity for K-Love to come to Tulsa on a better signal that is non-commercial as well if KXOJ is not concerned about a better signal. I also think it would make more sense to put KXOJ on 104.5 because otherwise Muskogee does does get a Christian AC signal if it is on 94.1 or 100.9. But Muskogee is not receiving a christian ac signal now.

Isn't 104.5 doing pretty well in ratings and revenue? Are they likely to blow that up?

Winter 2013:

KXOJ 100.9 4.0
KMYZ 104.5 3.1
KTSO 94.1 4.9

So 104.5 had the worst rating of the 3 yet the best signal. KXOJ on the weakest signal beat 104.5 and so would have the most growth potential on a bigger signal. KXOJ would want the biggest signal for their heritage station. I would think the purpose for buying the stations in the first place is to get a better signal for KXOJ. So it would be a given KXOJ gets the best signal.

Why all the concern about 104.5. Maybe because its modern rock format is the demographics for young adult to midde aged males who are the ones who most frequently post here? KTSO 94.1 had the best ratings and the one they would want to keep if they are concerned about ratings not 104.5.

Why are people saying 94.1 will become soft AC? Where did the rumor come from? Because of some reserved internet domains? If KXOJ goes to 104.5 and 100.9 to the sports animal both already have websites so they do not have to reserve new websites for them.

94.1 was so high in the ratings because they did an All Christmas format this year. There ratings were real low before the winter book. 104.5 would be better off if they changed there format to all 90's rock. New rock is not working for them, there core is 90's.

Only the sales of KTFR, KEMX and KCXR have been filed with the FCC. You can view the application here: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101552221&formid=314&fac_num=41636.

The other part of the deal has neither been announced nor filed at this point.

While I agree the current listeners will follow the format to another frequency, I don't see a stronger signal being a huge help for KXOJ. Christian radio has a loyal audience that is already listening at the lower power 100.9 signal. Judging from how CCM does in similar markets, I would think KXOJ on 100.9 is already at or near its critical mass and stands to gain little by upgrading its signal.

While there's no smoking gun that the Shamrock stations are going to Stephens, there's certainly strong circumstantial evidence something's about to happen. Why would they be selling KTFR, KEMX and KCXR when they're keeping the only KXOJ repeater outside the Tulsa market (KEOJ Caney, KS)? The most logical explanation is that they're getting ready to add Tulsa market stations. No, it's not the only possible explanation, but it's definitely the one that makes the most sense.

Keep in mind Stephens Media isn't an EMF or a KNYD. It's a business, not a mission. Outside of the Tulsa market, the company owns no Christian stations. So, if Stephens does end up putting KXOJ on a stronger signal, you can almost be guaranteed that it's because they see a better money-making opportunity. I suppose they could be thinking about a bigger stick replacing 100.9 for those loss areas created by selling KTFR and KEMX, but, when your purpose is to make money, you're going to consider all of your options.

If KXOJ does not care about building penetration and area's to the east then that should leave an opportunity for K-Love to come to Tulsa on a better signal that is non-commercial as well if KXOJ is not concerned about a better signal. EMF has been in Tulsa for at least the last 7 years, but it's always run Air-1. KTFR and KEMX should have played no part in its decision to go with Air-1 over K-Love given that neither of those sticks provide any building penetration at all in east Tulsa or Owasso. In fact, neither of them have ever provided building penetration over any significant portion of the Tulsa metro. Both cover sparsely populated, mostly-rural, areas of the Tulsa market. So, any decision EMF has made with regard to not competing with KXOJ has already been made considering only 100.9.

KXOJ, by the way, did air a version of its format on 100.3 for Muskogee in-between its two stints at "The Kross." Since it went back to "The Kross," it probably wasn't generating the money Stephens was expecting. Stephens is probably well aware that there's minimal money to be made in those rural areas.
