Stereo Oldies

Last mono 45

I didn't personally check it with my headphones. That's what some of the collectors stated at the BOTH SIDES NOW forum. There was a thread on LAST MONO 45 and FIRST STEREO 45.

A Bruce Springsteen LP, Nebraska??, was also reported to be mono as well as a STRAY CATS song, if I recall from that board.

Well, if they were Promo 45s, one side would be mono (until the early 80s, anyway).

"Rock This Town" was the Stray Cats song. It was mastered in mono and appeared in mono on the album as well.<P ID="signature">______________

Sort of a "replicate how it would've sounded" had it been released in the song's "sound era", I suppose.

The earliest stereo 45 (other than promo copies) I have is "Rice Is Nice" by the Lemonpipers...released a couple months before "Sky Pilot". There was also a Cowsills tune from around March/April '68 that was in stereo ("Saturation Sound" as they called it). Never knew SP was released on the black label in mono. I've only seen it on the blue/gold label. A&M released some singles in stereo on promo copies in 1967, though the store copies were mono.

The earliest I remember were "Hello, I Love You" by The Doors, and "She's Lookin' Good" by Wilson Pickett. The latter, being unusual because it was on Atlantic and they issued mostly mono singles until well into the 70's.

And don't forget "It's A Beautiful Morning" Young Rascals. (Atlantic) And I'm not certain...but I think "People Got To Be Free" both 1968 Spring Time. That's right Atlantic Records had some. But thre's one more possibly an ABC Dunhill recording, but too soon to call.

I think this says it all. They won't even play RAG DOLL, DAWN, or a ton of other great Four Seasons songs that hit the charts after Jan. 1, 1964.

I suspect most other "oldies" stations have similar restricted playlists.
