I can't figure out who thought this was a good idea. Why on earth would anyone listen to podcasts on the radio? Static-y, crackly, low-fi AM radio, no less? It's laughable.
One of the reasons to do a podcast is the freedom it provides (versus radio). I can't remember the last time I listened to a podcast that clocked in at exactly one hour. And you know why? Because they don't have to. I'd also venture that more hosts than not curse freely whenever they feel like it. So on top of being tethered to a radio (which is antithetical to very idea of podcasting), one would be listening to a show that's been sanitized and chopped up to fit a time slot. One could just as easily fire up the browser, download to an iPod, or download a podcast app to their mobile phone and listen to the actual podcast as it was intended to be heard, while roaming free in the world.
You're thinking from the listener point of view. From the station point of view, it's a great idea. These are unique personality oriented shows, and they're better than what the station was doing before. If anyone listens, it's gravy.
But if you're a listener who's tired of Rush and all the typical conservative talk, this is an alternative. If you like what you hear, then you'll subscribe and listen on your own time.

Well, from a listener point of view, to hear a podcast, you must seek it out. But for a radio station that plays podcasts, it's simpler. When you get in your car, you simply turn on the radio. If it was left at AM 1470 from the last time you drove, it's still there.
This is why I think radio and television stations will endure for some years to come. For you to seek out a podcast or get a TV show on demand, you have to do more work.
7-11 endures, even in places where supermarkets are 24 hours. To get a quart of milk and a loaf of bread, you can do it much faster at 7-11 and be on your way. I plan ahead and get my basics from a supermarket, all at once. But a lot of other people aren't as well thought out and keep 7-11 very popular. (The 7-11 in the name refers to the store originally being open from 7 am to 11 pm, while supermarkets were open fewer hours.)

While it may not be the most cutting edge or exciting concept in the world, it’s cheap, easy and it’s filler albeit a lot of filler. And I would imagine someone has to edit them for time and spot breaks which, unless they are an iheart media production, wouldn’t be recorded with those elements in mind.
The concept has created a “buzz” but aside from that I don’t really see much more of a gain taking this route. I guess they could have tried Music/Oldies again but that didn’t really work in the WKAP years and then you bring royalty expenses into the fold... for content on the cheap this makes perfect sense. Aside from some wattage, the patterns of WSAN and WAEB are quite similar, something I never realized, just at opposite ends of the dial.
