Stereo Strapping Cable for CBS Volumax

I have an older pair of CBS Volumax units donated for use in the high school on-campus radio station I'm working on building (I think they're the older 411's if memory serves me right). It's actually two of the older pre-Thompson type bolted together with a common beige front door.

I don't have a manual and finding one would be appreciated, but a more immediate need is the pinout for the cable to strap the control voltages to make both units track for stereo operation. They each have a DB9 connector on the rear chassis but they were received without the jumper. If someone happens to have the pin out for the coupling cable (or even better a copy of the manual) it would be greatly appreciated if you can help me out. Thx in advance.

Hi Bill!

I don't have a copy in my personal collection of manuals, but I found a manual online at <http://www.purpleaudio.com/resource/pdflib.html>, which you can download. Unfortunately, the schematic is really blurry, and I can't make out the jumper cable pin numbers. Maybe you can decipher it?

There may be a better quality copy online, but I couldn't find it.

BTW, when searching for 'Volumax' Google seems to return more results for a hair care product than an audio processor. ;D Sign o' the times!

Kind Regards,
David

Thanks for the lead. I blew it up electronically and it gives me a fair idea of what I'm looking at. I appreciate you digging that link up.

It's the same way on ebay - I see more hair conditioner than audio gear doing a search on the keyword "Volumax".

BTW: The local FM I use to engineer has an Ariane processor in their airchain and it sounds fab! One of these days I hope I can play with a box that sounds that good.

After much futzing I've found the schematic a bit hard to decipher, so if anybody has a hi-rez scan of the 411 schematic I would certainly appreciate a copy. Thanks.

It's a straight-through cable. Pins 1,2,3 active.
You can simply purchase a DB9-to-DB9 cable.

Back in the 70's, I had a pair of these and removing the cable actually increased the loudness with no audible reduction in separation. Try it with & without...

Ahhh I have a real stumper question about the Automax and Volumax. Does anyone have a diagram of the sealed, potted mystery modules found in these units (shown as a module on the schematics). I have a friends that's been wanting to rebuild and recap the units but without knowing what's in these modules, it's hopeless.

Thanks!

;D

Thanks for confirming that. I'm still in search of a copy of the schematic that's in better shape than the one I d/l'ed. Hopefully I'll come across one.

Not knowing what's in these potted mystery boxes shouldn't make recapping the Audi/Volumax "hopeless". From what I remember from the one tech I know who spent days carefully unpotting the modules I thought they were comprised of active components (althought this was over 20 years ago so my memory of this is spotty at best). I have a 411 stereo Volumax for a school district's FM which I'm going to recap if given the funds. If they totally give up on it I'd be willing to de-pot the modules, but I wonder if there's anything online about them.

That's what I was thinking...why strap them?

Generally, all the Audimax and Volumax needs as it gets older is re-capping and realignment. BTW, the meter bulbs are avaliable at Radio Shack.
Two of the best processors ever made.

I downloaded the manual, and by looking at the schematic, the poor drawing for J92 shows three wires. A grn-wht that goes to S-2A. S-2A has a note that says it's connected to J92 Pin 1. A blu-wht goes to S-2B. S-2B's note says it goes to J92 Pin 2. Pin 3 is grounded. Not hard to figure out.

I know of a AM that purchased the volumax and audimax new in 1968..and is still in service to this day

and the station sounds like pure issh...

I would think that their processors need recapping! Where are they?

a small town in NC.... shoot me an email ernestj @ gmail.com and I will give you more details

I was down there a few days ago...the station has a new engineers and started to do some work on the tx

coverage is better..but sound...I had to roll the bass eq in my car stereo up by 36db just to make it sound decent...
