STERLING MICS

"I'm told someone within Guitar Center designed this mic"

Yeah, designed by that guy who told me "Hosa cables are the best, man!"

Dood, sell all your mics and buy a classic U87 and you'll never wonder how other mics sound,
you'll have the best!

For the cost of a U87 I can get a Manley Reference. Far better mic.

A Brauner is better, IMO, than a U87.

I was wondering about the Sterling b/c of it's under $500 price point.

The Groove Tubes line of mics, now Sterling, was pretty good. I had a GT55 fet condenser. Nice mic for $300. I sold it and put the $$$ towards a TLM103. Only issue was proximity. Popped like a mutha'.

I don't think the sterling will fill the bill for your taste.i like the Brauner (ESPECIALLY for voiceover)over the U87.there are a couple of them on EBAY now.

But..but...the Neumann is..well gosh darn it all it's NEUMANN..and it's a U87 classic..with the chrome and the fine crafted rosewood presentation box with brass hinges and a certificate that proclaims it as a NEUMANN, and it's got a wind pop eliminator that hugs it's tapered body like a fine garment..Speaking of that I hear it also comes with a velvet protective pouch.

And it is a pretty good microphone, but they really jacked up the price for this "classic" series.. why?

Because people will pay it...Because it says Neumann. I'm with VODood. I've never been thrilled with the U87 for anything except cello. I think there's almost always a better choice. The U87 does make a great benchmark mic, though. Just my opinion.

My voice sounds just like a cello, that's why I like the U87.

Really, in my experience, the U87 just seems to find nuance
and character in voices that many other mics don't. It reveals
certain qualities that are good in some voices and bad in others.

We used one on the air at a radio station, some jocks sounded great on it, some didn't.

And, the quest for the perfect mic continues....

I've got a TLM103. Same capsule as a U87. Only difference is the 103 is one pattern. In essence you pay $1500-$1700 (retail) more for a U87 than a TLM 103 for the ability to have multi-patterns. Rip off.

Overall, not overtly in love with the 103.

I did a local show last year for a few months which I would ISDN to the station and I do fill-ins pretty often now and I've been using the GT55 after A/B'ing it against EV RE20's and RE27's and a Sennheiser 421, and I LOVE it for V/O. Great all around response. Records terrifically as well.
