Stern may have to take a pay cut

Anytime news writers use the word "may," you are reading thinly disguised creative speculation or fiction passed off as news. Same applies to question marks as in, "Will Howard take a pay cut?" Maybe (notice "may" appears in "maybe).

Howard doesn't "have to" do anything. He's got more money than he can ever spend, even with an ex-wife and a super model.

He can....

Walk away.
Do TV again (his WWOR show was great, often surpassing SNL).
Do another book.
Do another movie.
Do a satellite show for points (and maybe end up with more money).

He probably won't go back to terrestrial radio. He's been pretty adamant about that.

If he's free of the daily grind of a radio show, there are also sorts of things he can do.

If I were his agent, I'd be talking to Time-Warner. Conan-Lopez-Howard each weeknight could be a gangbuster line-up.

What is this, 1989?

You're right about speculation not being news, though.

[Howard Stern] doesn't talk about news, unless there is news about lesbians.
...you obviously haven't bothered listening to his show lately. The final hour is taken up with taking about news events, and at least a third of most programs before that hour is reached...

You can't characterize it as "obviously haven't bothered" if it requires special equipment and a subscription to a service and being there at a particular time to find the show. Just sayin. :)

...sure you can. Especially if you haven't bothered to acquire the special equipment and pay the subscription fee either. ;D (The time question isn't relevant; Stern's show is on Channel 100 around 20 hours a day, live and repeats)...

Even without that last hurdle, it sounds like A LOT of bother. ;D

It is a lot of bother. And a lot of expense. However, I wouldn't waste my time listening to Stern if he was free. It's not a question of not being bothered, it's a question of him just being so incredibly banal and boring.

As I recall, he always talked a little bit about things that were in the news. As long as salacious celebrity gossip was in the news, Stern would talk about it.

I read that Howard has responded (in his inimitable fashion) and says he won't take a pay cut. He points out that the company CFO has gotten a big raise and that a major portion of subscribers subscribe for his show.

Translation: Management is trying to turn up the heat in negotiations (aided by some gullible reporters). Howard refuses to blink. The longer he waits, the stronger his position comes. All Howard has to do is extend his end of year vacation and watch as the Baba-Booey crowd cancels their subscriptions. They can't afford to lose him; he can afford to lose them.

He's always talked about news. That's the surface reason for having Robin there. She's supposed to be the "straight man" news person to him. Of course she's developed into much more than that, but Howard's always done news content. I haven't listened in years, but I'd guess he still does it.

Word is just out that Stern isn't taking a pay cut. The New York Daily News reports that Stern has signed a new five year contract with Sirius/XM and he says he did not take a pay cut.
