Do you believe air personalities can improve their work with performance-enhancing drugs?
A few from the DFW airwaves in the 1970s might own up to that...I think I can safely say that some of Mike Selden's prowess at the mic was due in part to that (not steroids, but other things.) But how do you deal with that...For example, it's well known that the original Sat Night Live crew was on "something" for most of their 4 years there (well, Jane Curtin denies SHE was,) but when some of the best entertainment of the era is created, and it happens to be while under the influence, do you take a stand and shun it, or do you just accept it and go on? Selden's use of whatever does not change my positive opinion of his work, but not everyone thinks that way.

Do you think Ralph Chapman's outbursts were due to 'roid rage?
I think that was a lethal mixture of obsessive-compulsive and manic-depressive...all natural and organic. These days, you'd force-feed him lithium and Prozac. Had they done that to him 40 years ago, we'd surely missed out on some great radio!

Finally, does ANYONE listen to the Baylor games on WBAP? I mean come on ... it's Baylor, and the alums money is good ... but BAYLOR.
It's my understanding, and you probably know this already from sitting in my chair before, that it's merely a "gift" from the alumni association so the strong concentration of Baylor exes in DFW and beyond can hear the games...and what better-coverage station to use than WBAP? If the once-quoted-here $6,000 per hour (monthly) infomercial rate is applied to a 3-hour game, plus some pregame and postgame shows, times an entire season, then include occasional basketball games (men's AND women's)...that's a chunk of change for the station to grab---and guaranteed money, and nothing more than a board op needed back at the studio. I believe Baylor buys up the entire block, so there's no local breaks, local spots, etc...just a station ID when required.
