Steve Buckley comes out...

I'm guessing he'll never be sitting in for John Dennis when he's on vk.
Turned on this morning and wondered why Gerry was worked up into such a homophobic frenzy (more than usual).
Got to work and saw the Herald, all made sense then.

were respectful/applauded his decision from the parts I heard.
I'd concur with that, but what choice did they have?

The funny thing was I tuned in T&R in full flight about an unmentioned personality coming out and thought to myself is it a. b. or c. (of closeted sports guys)? Maybe this puts pressure on b. and c. I don't know?

The funniest thing I did hear today was Toucher questioning Wallach about what he knew and what he had thought about Buckley going back years. Wallach was nervous but carefully answered the questions.

now that I think about it, most of the people at WEEI probably knew this already. Buck was on this afternoon and I caught a few minutes and he said he'd been getting non-stop messages/calls/texts showing support including Tito Francona and Curt Schilling. The latter surprises me a bit, to be honest, given his devout religious beliefs and conservative politics but good for him.

What is the connection with being gay or lesbian and being religious?.

I doubt it was how he was raised as he had a strong male influence in his dad,

Gay and or lesbians can be a genetic factor.

Many are homophobic till it hits home

I love when my conservative friends say that "everyone is a liberal until they are mugged." Well, everyone is a conservative until they learn that a close family member or friend is gay.

no, what I meant was that Curt Schilling is devout and quite conservative and expressed support for Steve. And my opinion is that homosexuality is genetic. Sorry for the confusion.

Huh? Maybe you had tuned in the the wrong station. Of course, the old adage 'I never would have heard it if I hadn't believed it' comes to mind.

I know for a fact that it was common knowledge around the building a dozen or so years ago. Nobody seemed to care. Anyone surprised by the announcement or the article must be the same people who were blindsided when Brudnoy came out.

Regards,
TSB

Therefore Dick Cheney is not a conservative.

you can be conservative without being intolerant of other peoples way of life.

There is a term for people like that, and it is Libertarian!

Even well known MA republicans including Mitt Romney who is more conservative than most appointed many openly gay people to high level positions. Dan Grabauskas and Mitchell Adams would be 2 names that come to mind.

The Lt Governor candidate put up by the R's in the last election is gay, and it was no secret to anyone who knew him, but he outed himself in a Globe interview. Baker took some heat for picking Richard as his running mate by some of the bible thumpers and assorted other people.

Now being a Libertarian myself, I don't care what one, two, three or ten consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom. If Steve Buckley has no problem with his sexuality, who am I to care.

It will be interesting to see if the jock sniffers and assorted other sycophants that are talent or callers on sports radio stations will tone down their bigotry.

Same here. (There are some who use the term classical liberal instead of libertarian...more that a few people have opinions that are mostly conservative but not totally. As Dennis Miller put it,
"I don't mind if Larry marries Steve but I would object to an Islamofascist firebombing their wedding".

btw not only is Richard Tisei (Baker's running mate) gay, but in 2002 Jane Swift---
the acting governor who took over for Cellucci-- wanted openly gay Pat Guerrero, mayor of
Melrose, as a running mate. Her polls cratered so much that M. Romney came in to the rescue
and she bowed out.

In 2002, after serving as then-Governor Jane Swift's Deputy Chief of Staff, Patrick became the nation's first openly gay candidate for lieutenant governor when he was chosen by Gov. Swift to be her running mate

btw some may wonder if this will make a difference "in the locker room". Sexual harrassment can be M-M, F-F, or M-F; for a good case of the latter

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Olson
(Patriots players fondled their genitals in front of her, etc.; the team owner called her a "classic bitch"; after an NFL investigation the Pats were fined and the team's GM was fired; Olson was "subjected to harassment from fans of the Patriots. Her tires were slashed, she received hate mail and death threats, and her apartment was burglarized"

We'll have to see if this makes any difference...

Callahan said that he knew about Buck before this announcement. I have to believe he did. They both worked at the Herald and WEEI for years. D&C had nothing bad to say about Buck. This is an opportunity for feigned outrage to allow the D&C haters to scream bloody murder even though they did nothing. I'm surprised I haven't seen a Metco remark yet.

They don't like Barney Frank. Neither do I, but it's not because of his sexual orientation.

Lisa Olsen was what? 25 years ago?

I think times have changed since then, and with the NFL's new personal conduct policy, that should limit any blatant bigotry in the locker room.

A players endorsement deal, etc could also be in jeopardy if they were caught being homophobic.
