Steve Christy -R.I.P.

GRABIJAS-CHRISTY Stephan Francis (Steve Christy)
"Mr. WENY"
Age 75 of Elmira, NY passed away on Thursday July 29, 2010 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Steve was born July 24, 1935 in Buffalo, NY the son of the late Martin and Stephania Cisz Grabijas. Steve served his country Honorably with the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1960. He married his wife Mary L. "Lou" Guriey Grabijas-Christy who pre-deceased him on July 5, 2006. He was also pre-deceased by his brother and sisters: Marty Grabijas, Verna Monczynski, Fran Grabijas and brother-in-law: Donald Sniezak. Steve was a Disc Jockey for several years for WENY and the Elmira Heights American Legion. He was a lifetime member of both the Big Flats American Legion Post and the Elmira Heights American Legion Post. He was a bartender at the Elmira Heights Legion and the Horseheads Elks Club for many years. Steve loved gardening, taking care of his lawn and growing his roses. He recently retired as the News Weatherman for WENY TV in Horseheads. He enjoyed entertaining and working with and for the community he loved and served for so many years. He is survived by his loving daughter: Susan A. Swan and her fiancé Lewis Cook and granddaughter Paige Cook; son: Thomas W. Swan of Jacksonville, FL; sisters and brothers-in-law: Ann and Jack Heltman; Char Sniezak and Al Monczynski; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a community of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lynch Funeral Home 318 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY on Thursday August 5, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8PM. Steve's funeral services will be held at the conclusion of calling hours at 8PM Where Full Military Honors will be accorded Mr. Grabijas Christy. It was Steve's wish that he be remembered through memorials The American Cancer Society 1316 College Avenue Elmira, NY 14901.

Wow....I met him in 1972 or so when I visited WENYTV when they were in the Mark Twain Hotel downtown (I was on Jerry's Clubhouse!). This is so sad....he is truly a legend as one of the greats in Elmira TV and radio.
