Steve Cochran may be returning to Chicago (Robert Feder)

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. My hope would be that Salem will leave Cochran alone and add a measure balance to the station. While it's hard for me to imagine Salem programming anything that's not right-wing, Cochran also strikes me as a centrist "voice of reason". Not to mention a live and local proven known quantity with a following.

I'm guessing that Salem is going to dump the live morning show and plug in a satellite. The Steve Cochran show is an experiment and depending on how it goes could be expanded in a year or so. In the meantime Steve will serve as the stations spokesperson at live local events and such.

Salem's radio division is losing revenue so it can only afford 2 hours of Steve Cochran. Certainly can't afford a live morning show and a live afternoon show... way too expensive for a station in 39th place in the market.

But hey...what do I know? ???

I think you may have it right.

I'm not comfortable about this. Cochran always seemed to be a sensible guy at 'GN, staying in the middle, maybe a little left of center. Is he willing to whore himself to Salem and turn into an out-and-out teabagger to fit their profile?

Well, Big John Howell seems to be a bit of a centerist on certain issues. Actually he seems to be conservative on many fiscal issues and centerist or a bit left of center on some social issues, which would make him a bit more libertarian then conservative. So perhaps Cochran can fit there as well. I know he has always painted himself as a moderate and neither Republican or Democrat. But I still don't know if he will sound too left leaning for their station.

I think the bigger question is what will happen to Michael Savage. What did Feder mean by saying that Savage's status was "still up in the air"? Does that mean where he will be moved to on WIND's schedule, or is he thinking about retiring? I wish Feder would clear this up, or not say it at all. Maybe if he still stays on the air they should move him to a tape delayed 7 to 9 PM slot. I mean seriously, does anyone actually listen to Hugh Hewitt?

I think what Feder meant was that Savage may try to shop his show to another Chicago station if WIND plans to run his show in the middle of the night.

Considering that I don't think anyone else here will pick him up--even WLS--I would suspect Savage would be banished to delayed overnights.

Hewitt's a Salem show, so he stays on WIND, along with Medved and Prager.

You're probably right, but it doesn't hurt for Savage to shop around. Does WIND still carry Mike Gallagher?

There once was a DJ outa Baltimore named Steve Cochran the Rock & Roll Doctor. His talent has been tapped somewhat regularly here and there.

That's a good point. Since WLS already runs Hannity in the early evenings, and with Savage sounding further right leaning than Rush Limbaugh, Savage won't have a chance in heck landing there. I think Savage's only other option aside from a tape delayed show on WIND would be ending up on one of those religious talk stations further down the AM dial. Isn't there one that runs Loyola men's basketball? That would probably be the one he would end up on though he might even be too controversial for them!

Good points as well. It looks like WIND is turning mainly into a Salem/local personality outlet during the week, and brokered radio on the weekends.

Mike Gallagher, Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager are all on tape delay, with Gallagher on the air from 9 to 11 PM. I don't know if Gallagher is affiliated with Salem, but I find him far more entertaining than Hewitt and Prager, though they are good too. I guess if Savage is to remain on WIND, Gallagher would be the one to go, or Gallagher or Savage would have to be banished to overnights. Anyway this goes, it should be interesting to see where Savage ends up.

Gallagher is a Salem guy, so he's probably staying.

I prefer Gallagher too. My guess is that Savage is trying to see if there is anything else out there in the Chicago market. He's got nothing to lose by fishing if WIND is going to ban him to overnight delays.
