This whole WGN thing over the past few months has been like nothing I have ever seen in a market and station in the size of a city like Chicago. It has been a revolving door of announcers bouncing back and forth from one time slot to another. It has also been a place where veteran pros like Bob Sirot have been shown the door. Even Garry Meier, who I thought was and is a great addition to the airstaff, has openly talked about the changes at WGN. If you happened to listen that day and if you didn't, I believe it is available on a podcast, the general consensus was, WGN has this older, loyal (with "older" being the dominating word) listenership that does not want the station to change at all. Sorry folks. WGN is changing and I believe in the long run will profit from it's risk taking and numerous personality changes. But it does have to stop soon in my opinion. Steve C. will definitely be a loss. Even though personally I have always thought he was a Letterman wannabe. Meier is solid, witty and has gone to show his critics wrong by proving he does not need a co-host. Elton Jim and Steve Bertran are just enough for him to play off of.
Just my 2 cents. It looks like Mike McConnell will be joining the line-up soon. He is a midwestern guy who I used to listen to on album rock WTUE back in the 70's and early 80's. He made the switch to WLW where he has had solid numbers for years. He is a no-nonsense guy who should do fine but, what do I know? What does anyone know these days when it comes to radio?
Garry said it himself a few weeks ago - radio is in for the fight of it's life for the next 3-5 years and it better start getting right. And do it now. Competition is tough and there are a ton of options for listeners. Unlike when these guys were in their hey-day.
