Steve Craig coming back?

Former 99Xer Steve Craig is hinting on his blog he might be back on the air as soon as Monday.

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?f...n=548F7820-67A2-498C-8CAC269888FF1F4026281579

But Steve won't tell me what's going on yet. He said he should be able to let it all out by tomorrow. So he could be going to a local station after Cumulus lets him out of his noncompete. Or he could be going to satellite (doubtful). Or he could be going out of market (also doubtful). I'm purely speculating but perhaps he might land at Dave FM. That would be the most logical place. But if so, who would be supplant?

Easy he would take Sully. They already do Retro at 5:00. Or they would slide Mara into Sully's spot. Her signature lunch hour moves to 5:00 and Steve goes back to middays with Retro at 12:00. Sully was out yesterday but I also though he was out last week. I could be wrong on that though.

Other option afternoon shift on True Oldies or VT middays on the River under the name Craig Stevens.

I find it hard to believe though they would let him out of his non-compete.

Lame. But I do know one person who likes 50 year-olds delivring to them their new rock music. Outside his mind must be ecstatic.

not ecstatic but this is cool. ecstatic would be giving him an fm signal. tibbs i'd rather have a 50 yr old playing new alt music then a 50 yr old playing 70s sh*t and steve craigs cool. but this is still cumluss so they'll f*ck it up.
i hope he books as soon as hes allowed to work at another station cuz he deserves way more then just hd and internet.

Cumulus is paying Steve and Leslie to do nothing. Someone higher up said, "put one of them to work," thus Steve on 99x,com. In addition, Steve is currently "on the air" on Thrashers commercials airing all over the dial. Steve is under contract until July, at that point he will take over afternoons on DAVE, Sully will move to nights and Margot will move to weekends. Chris Orff will be moving to mornings soon enough.

I honestly doubt having a name like Steve Craig on a dot com station is going to bring listeners over to the "Internets." I also doubt Steve's heart is really in it. He will be a good soldier, read the cards and count the days.

I disagree, Neil. Steve has a pretty decent sized following, and I think that'll add foot traffic to 99x.com at least. One of the biggest problems with HD-2 channels and banning stations to internet domains is that the higher ups haven't put any stock in them. There was no draws, until now. Satellite didn't get much of a pulse until they hired Howard Stern (not comparing the two, other than they are known personalities), although they paid too much, as in he pulled in subscribers, but the number of subscribers were not enough to offset their debt. Steve's already on the Cumulus payroll until his contract runs out, so why not use him? And, since they are using him, I'm sure they'll use it as leverage to extend his non-compete.

By the way, Neil, Steve's also employed by the Thrashers, so the ads were probably through them and had nothing to do with his radio gig.

He should sign on by saying goodbye to 99X's listeners.

There was a time in the not-too-distant past that people worldwide tuned in to the webcast to hear the Retroplex. (I seem to remember the folks at the Antarctic research station contacting him at one point.) The better question is whether any of the people who used to tune in for that will hear about this (and feel like giving it a shot).

I'm a little surprised that Steve is doing this. Maybe he's getting bored, or that he enjoys it enough to do it anyway. (Seems like it'd be better for his next station if they could announce it as "his big return", though with HD radio's non-existent listener base, they might still be able to do so.)

IYH, you seem to be the kind of person who would hang themselves as they're being given the keys to the city.

Any Steve Craig online or on air is a good thing. ;D

I think Margot is a wonderful talent with an encyclopedic knowledge of music, especially Americana. I would move her to weekends so she can concentrate on programming the station rather than having to do daily on-air shifts. In most major markets, the PD and MD rarely have shifts. Norm Winer Program Director for WXRT-FM, Chicago and VP of Rock Programming for CBS Radio Networks works one shift a year, Christmas morning (he's MOT). When I am PD, I will do the same and I will play all Jewish artists:
Bob Dylan
Jakob Dylan
Amy Winehouse
Gene Simmons (Kiss)
Neil Diamond
Carly Simon
Norman Greenbaum
Bette Midler
Jack Black (Tenacious D)
David Lee Roth
Paul Simon
Carole King
Randy Newman
Lenny Kravitz
Joey Ramone (The Ramones)
Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
Peter Green (Fleetwod Mac)

Never cared for Steve, and I still don't understand why anyone would want to listen to online djs when there's great music-only sites like Pandora.

So who would take Margot's shift?

Also don't forget

Adam Duritz
Michael Bolton
Chris Cornell
Howie Epstein(TP & the Heartbreakers)
Donald Fagen(Steely Dan)
Mike Gordon(Phish)
Lou Reed
Billy Joel
Joey Kramer(Aerosmith)
Peter Wolf
Max Weinberg

At the very least you can have a great Happy Passover weekend special featuring all your favorite Jewish artist.

Margot is the most AAA-format-sounding personality on Dave-FM. I use KINK as my standard, and she sounds the most like them of anyone on Dave. I'd like her to stay on in the evening.

Dave-FM has gotten the music just about where it should be, in my opinion. Occasionally I hear a song and I think, "And this is an AAA station?" But for the most part, Dave's music is good. In fact, it's my favorite station for music.

Steve Craig--if it ever happened--would be a tremendous addition to Dave.

And by the way, is Sales Weasel asleep today?

No. Yay for Steve, and keep Margot right where she is, thankyouverymuch.

Steve Craig on the air in any way, shape or form is a great thing. Welcome back, Steve.
I think once the word gets out, people will follow him to the internet.

Neil, if you do get that PD job, you should probably learn that Orff's first name is Tim, not Chris... Calling them by their wrong names probably won't inspire confidence the first day on the job...

And, unless I've forgoten how to read ratings, Margot has been killing it at night 24-54 the last 3 trends now. Best daypart ratings in the core demo at Dave by a long shot... So something must be working for her...

I'm psyched about this news. It's almost as good as having 99x back altogether. In all the years that I was listening to 99x, Steve was the one true constant.
