Steve Dahl returns to terrestial radio

Steve Dahl is back on the radio for a daily show! 1530 WJJG hits a “Super” Tri-fecta with the addition of Chicago Radio Legend and internet pioneer Steve Dahl to the station’s growing lineup of “super-talkers”, Mancow Muller and Michael Savage. How well do you think the ratings will be now?

The big problem is that WJJG can only be heard in a very small portion of the Chicago suburbs.

The guy who once had Chicago in the palm of his hand will now do a daily show on a Class D AM? Seriously? Radio is like crack.

I wondered why would the super jocks of big radio celeberties like: Steve Dahl, Mancow, Howard Sterns, Jerry Springer, and Tom Murphy would be interested operating from a little small rink-a-dink two bit radio station, when they can affored to broadcast on 50.000 watts of power radio station? Unless if they want to buy the station and Boost up the power at 50.000 watts...

Well yes and no. During the middle of the day this station can be picked up towards the Wisconsin border and probably west of Aurora. I'd be willing to be most of the city of Chicago can pick up the signal as well, at least on a car radio. The problem really starts about an hour or so before sunset when the signal is overtaken by the 1530 ESPN station from Cincinnati about 12 or so miles to the north where I live. Thankfully there is no live programming at the time, but I still would rather listen to a one day tape delay of Savage over Steve Cochran on my way home from work, even though Cochran is a pretty decent host as well. So after the time change next month, they will probably be off the air anyway by the time I leave work.

Btw, to clarify, the Savage rerun "officially" airs between 11 AM and 1 PM, but they repeat from 4 PM to 6 PM as long as they stay on the air. But that will change after October 31st as the sign-off time changes monthly, and will REALLY change after the time change the week after. Which means a lot more Steve Cochran or the Score for me in a couple of weeks!

But back to the point in hand. Since the signal comes in very clear during the day, there is no reason that WJJG shouldn't be able to at least match the ratings of WIND, which may not sound like much. But anything over the 0.0 rating this station earns now would be a great improvement!

Feder says that Dahl's show is just a daily three-minute "best of" his podcast--and that Dahl is pissed that he's being promoted as part of the station:

To quote Chachi from "Happy Days", "WAAHAH, WAAHAH, WAAHAH!" ::)

This guy is upset that his golf game was interrupted when so many reporters were trying to talk to him! Amazing! I for one am glad the station is not giving him a talk show as he has not deserved one for over 30 years. Plus this guy never met a freebie he didn't like! ::)

Much as I'd like to root for them enjoying some measure of success and give them a shout-out "A for effort".... I really don't think WJJG will do any more than make a blip in the ratings...and they'll be lucky to do that. Perhaps what they can do is use the terrestial signal as a launchpad for a successful streaming effort.

Technically it IS physically possible to hear WJJG in much of the the Chicago area. But the area where the signal is strong enough to be competitive encompasses a radius of perhaps 8-10 miles from the stick. Not even the entire "red" area in the radio-locator map. And there's the serious problem of WCKY skywave during morning and afternoon drive. I also would suggest that it doesn't help matters that for most Chicago-area listeners, the AM dial stops at 1000 WMVP.

Significant power increase? Not likely....they're pretty well shoehorned in with the facility they've got. Their former 1700 watts (or whatever it was) didn't really accomplish much. Certainly wasn't a game changer.

But hey...I like the "aim high" approach and hope they can find a way to make something of it!
