Steve Dahl

Is anyone as bored as I am with Steve on JACK? Do we care about his drive in or how to talk up a song to the post? I wish Mancow was on at least he is giving opinions on what is happening in the world NOW with some energy!!!! Dahl = sleep.

WJMK has been dead since they started the JACK format nearly 3 years ago. Before that they had a respectable base (11th to 12th in the ratings). Actually the Oldies 104.3 jocks were told just a few weeks before the June 3, 2005 switch that they were doing fine and increasing their audience. WJMK had been rising slightly since December 2004 when the dropped the "Oldies" signature and became just WJMK. But until they find people that don't put listeners to sleep, they won't rise in the ratings. Mancow would be good for JACK.

(By the way... I was a fan of the former WJMK (Magic / Oldies), and can't stand the JACK format.)

WJMK Fan, you can still hear your favorite station online or with an HD radio (WJMK-HD2):

http://www.oldieschicago.com/

When Jack first appeared, the former WJMK jocks moved to WJMK-HD2. I think this was the first non-automated HD2 sation in the country with live jocks. Eventually they were all let go by CBS to cut costs. Interesting that WJMK-HD2 still uses jingles, and they still have the Saturday Night 70's show.

I bought the lowest-priced HD radio currently made at Fry's Electronics in Downers Grove. This is the only store that I'm aware of the Chicago area that carries this:

http://www.radiosophy.com/

Reception may be a problem if you are more than 30 miles away from the transmitter.

Or you can just listen to WZZN (The True Oldies Channel) which is the same format as the old WJMK, although with more automation and voice tracking.

I happened to sit a few rows behind Steve at the hockey game on Sunday. It motivated me to listen to his show on Monday morning. It seemed to move so slow and had a lot of "dead air". It still was much better than I remember Mancow's shows. They aren't really in the same category of broadcaster and appeal to different demographics. I would much rather have Steve on the air - although I think he was better on afternoons - than have Mancow back. Garry Meier is the guy we need back on the airwaves. He did a great job at WCKG until the format changed.

I know that they moved to the HD feed. I still occasionally listen to the feed, but its nothing without the jocks. I do listen to WZZN, but they need more local personalities. In fact I'm listening to them right now. I also have airchecks of WJMK from the 1980s through 2000s, so I also listen to those.

WJMK Fan, Is there anyway you could post some of the airchecks on here, I would love to listen to them.
Thanks, have a great day

Dahl's contract is being ridden out on JACK. CBS is done with him. They are out of the male oriented radio wherever possible. Dahl's bored, old, and tired. Mancow will be back and will remind everyone how boring his imitators are.

Let me get this straight. You think DAHL imitated MULLER instead of the other way around?

You think ANYONE not named Rover imitated Muller, instated of the other way around?

The only reason Muller even had his limited success on Rock 103.5 was because he got to Chicago when Stern had no affiliate there, and could thus play the "Chicago vs. New York" angle when Stern got on WCKG. Otherwise he'd have quickly been exposed for the hack he was.....and is.

Hey, I'm beggining to think this is a bunch of interns from other radio shows! (wish we had to use our real names.) You radio people are out of touch! That's why you lose. Chicago loves Mancow & ratings DO NOT LIE!

You are free to use your own name if you wish too Erich. :D :D

...actually, I seem to recall that Muller showed up when Stern was on WJJD, and Howard was on WLUP-AM before that. As for Muller's being a hack, well, I'd start considering apologising to hacks the world over were I you ;-) ...

I was listening to Steve-n-Garry develop the shtick long, long before anyone ever heard of Mancow.
They were the perfect wise-ass thinking-guy's rock-n-roll DJs.
I remember once when the loop ( WLUP ) was ragging on them about too much talk, not enough music, and they let music play at -20 db while they
continued to wise-ass about stuff. Still a great memory.
My first impression and subsequent, of Mancow, are that he's trying to channel the wise-ass Steve-Garry team interplay in one person, and it doesn't work.
Same thing for Howard Stern, but he's a NYC thing as I see it.
Dahl and Meier created the genre, and don't discount for one second the fact Steve was going almost nowhere until the "magic" with Garry staying over from the night shift showed that they could come up with some really funny stuff.
In fact Garry had to stay over to cover for Steve who was...enjoying youth to the fullest.
Steve is a funny wise-ass. Garry is "the thinking man's wise-ass" which is why the pair was so incredibly engaging to listen to.
Just like Beavis and Butthead with actual brains.

Mancow will never be on Chicago airwaves again. This is fact. I know his agent..we talk.

Erich has lost his target audience in Chicago and cannot get that back. With the rise of XM and Sirius there are way too many options for talk and otherwise. And with the merger of both coming soon, terrestrial radio will be nothing more than background noise.

If Erich "mancow' was such a "heavyweight" in the broadcasting industry, why hasn't Sirius or XM scooped him up? I will tell you why. There is no market for him or his propaganda. Unlike the views of O and A, Stern, Bubba, and others, mancow cannot hold himself in the talkshow arena anymore.

The "shockjock" days are over, gone..buh bye! People want relevance, they want humor, but they want consistency. That is something mancow never had. One day he was beating on a politician, the next day he was tossing midgets down a bowling alley?!? You call that consistency? If you listen to Limbaugh you know what you are gonna get. You listen to O and A, you know what you are gonna get. Same goes with Stern. Mancow? Hell no! Hence, no more Mancow on radio.

People are too smart today, if that want humor they will find it. If they want politics, they will find it.

That is why mancow is paying $10,000 per month to rent a small studio in River North, so he can broadcast to drooling, acne faced, country folk in Alabama and call himself syndicated, whatever makes him feel better I guess.

So, to end all this horrah-- Erich will not be on any stations in Chicago. WttW is doing cutbacks and it is projected that he will loose his Tuesday night gig. All he has is his website and that is even losing hits.

Thanx for your time Chicago.

Mancow is far from a shockjock.....and he is a big FREE SPEECH guy and has always said he will not sell out to XM and or Sirrius.....He had Kids in the Hall in Studio on Thursday it was GREAT!!!!!!!! Give it a listen you may learn something......Mancow has a mostly new cast of crazies, it is a great listen.

I have to take one thing you said, and it will hopefully give you a little more insight on Mancow.

"and always said he will not sell out" I am just going to use that part of the line.

Mancow worked in here in Chicago for ROCK 103.5(where he started in Chicago), while he was on 103.5 he bashed Q101 and their
listeners on a daily basis. He called Q101 Queer 101 on a regular basis.

While he was on 103.5 I remember hearing that phrase "I will not sell out" quite often.
What do you think Mancow did when "queer 101 offered him more money? You guessed it he SOLD OUT!

He took the contract and moved over to Q101, and when there he said how great Q was and how ROCK 103.5 sucked.

Now obviously Q101 offered him a great contract and more money, and no one can fault a guy for going for more money: but,
to go to a station you bashed as bad as he did for the money and say you are not sellout? Then when you get on the new station
you turn the table's and demonize your old station the way he did to 103.5?

I am in radio and I understand this would not be the first or last time a scenario like that will happen.

Now, Irishivy, If you were running a station would you trust this guy on your station? Knowing at one moment he is your
best friend and overnight he will turn on you?

My point is this guy is fake one day a shock jock, the next a conservative, the next day a "free speech advocate".
He has burned to many bridges and he is not on the air because of that. The radio climate is also changing a lot
with companies slashing their most loyal employees AKA: CITADEL, Clear Channel, CBS etc: Do you think that these
companies our going to take a risk with this guy, when they already know his track record?

Muller arrived in '94, between the period when WLUP-AM dumped Stern in '93 and when WCKG picked him up in '95 (then 'CKG dumped him after a few months, then Infinity put him on WJJD, then he went back to WCKG when that company bought CKG).

Humblest apologies to any hacks for being lumped in with Muller

LOL. In other words he still has the same tired "zoo" ensemble that he did in 1994, yet he is FAR from a shock jock!

Kids In The Hall are great, too bad that their humor probably goes far over the heads of the average Natty Light-swilling Kansas redneck that makes up 99% of what's left of Muller's audience.

Muller wouldn't "sell out" to XM or Sirius because neither would have anything to do with him.........unless as filler on one of Stern's channels (now THAT would be hilariously ironic) a la Bubba The Love Sponge.

He made a decent career out of ripping off Stern (among others)...now as his career sinks his show is 50% shock jock, 50% Fox News ripoff and 100% train wreck. I imagine it sounds something like this.

"I am a proud American and a man of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior! Barack HUSSEIN Obama should be shot for treason!!"
(cue 1997 Daft Punk music bed for 30 seconds)
"In the studio...Bob Guccione with the siamese lesbians!"
