Steve Harvey out, Rickey Smiley In

HOT 103 Jamz in Kansas City has dropped Steve Harvey's Morning Show in favor for Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Across the street, Cumulus Urban AC MAGIC 107.3 has Tom Joyner. See the problem? 2 morning shows aimed at an older crowd, but HOT 103 JAMZ isn't Urban AC.

Meaningless, I say. Mobile's hip-hop-heavy WBLX "93-BLX" is helmed by Steve Harvey's show, with the TJMS being on co-owned urban AC WDLT for close to 15 years, if not more.

Even if the roles were reversed (Joyner on Hot, Harvey on Magic) I'll bet you it wouldn't have much of an effect on music choice or ratings for the remainder of their respective broadcast days. The archetype both shows cater towards consists of African-American women. If you like urban music in KC, any choice other than 103.3 or 107.3 will be a heavily diluted one.

Rumors are swirling that Harvey is about to be dropped from more stations. Word is he's always away from his morning show to concentrate on hosting Family Feud.

FINALLY!! Stupid radio exec's are starting to realize that Sleepy Steve is not HIP HOP and doesn't fit the format.

And if its true that Steve is too busy, well he pulled that same ishhhh back with his first radio job at WGCI in 1995, it lasted bout 9months. He was always out of town and had fill in hosts. He doesn't take radio seriously, I think he uses it to fund other projects in between.

I'd love to see the show lose affiliates as quick as Star and Buckwild did. lol

*kanye shrug*

It's one syndicated show to another on KPRS. Too bad they just didn't just go back local in the mornings. As mentioned above, KPRS target demographic it's aiming for in the mornings is black females, primarily 25-40 yr old. Rickey Smiley might be the ideal since there isn't much of syndicated offerings, but the station is still going to to remain a full-service urban that heavily dayparts its song rotations. At least it's black-owned so they do seem to care about the audience..

I wouldn't believe any such rumors. While it may seem like Harvey is 'always away', there's probably a set amount of broadcasts he must fulfill to be fully paid--likely similar to arrangements other syndicated hosts have. I remember former ESPN personality Dan Patrick explaining such on the air after listener email complaints about him 'always' being gone, also. His own contract at the time required him to do at least 200 shows a year, meaning that even if he missed 60 broadcasts (out of 260 possible weekdays, not excluding holidays), that's still less than one third of the year.

Also, there are probably production elements for Family Feud going on now as part of Harvey's transition as the new host (test runs for Steve's benefit, new production staff in Orlando, promos, etc.). And those commitments aren't guaranteed to be the same if he stays in that role for a few seasons. As I'm sure you probably knew, most daily game shows tape more than one episode a day. (Here's the taping schedule for Family Feud.)

Harvey's daily schedule probably isn't as cramped as you'd think, or else he couldn't have said yes for the game show. Besides, if Sean Hannity, Ryan Seacrest, Dan Patrick, Ed Schultz, Jim Rome, etc. can all swing daily radio and TV on the side...so can a brotha :D

Eau - contrair, did i spell that right? I think, Steve loves TV more than Radio and if you put him in front of the camera, he will jump and leave most everything else behind.

The main two issues that people tell me they have a problem when they listen to Steve is that he

1. Talks down to his nephew constantly (that's so wonderful for someone to talk down to someone else when they claim to be born-again)

2. Is too preachy.

I don't know, I couldn't handle the show for 1 hour. *flip* But this is what older females tell me when we get to talking about radio.

Confirmation that Harvey's Family Feud work won't interfere with his morning radio work: He recently talked to NY Post Michael Starr about how his weekends are going be busier than ever.

1. This is schtick between two comedians/radio personalities. If you thought that awkwardness was real :D...well, that just means Steve and Tommy are doing a good job.

2. The show features many segments with listeners calling or writing in for relationship advice. Harvey's got a bestselling comedy book based on relationship advice. It'd be pretty easy to sound 'preachy' spinning an opinion or two about what others should do in their situations, but enough folks seem to like as the start of their weekday.

Take Steve Harvey off of KJLH and put Cliff Winston back on the morning drive. My bus ride to school is unbareable because of him.
