Steve Harvey to 102.5

As had been rumored, WAMJ-FM (102.5 WR&B) will put Steve Harvey's syndicated show into morning drive starting on June 19 (according to All Access). The rumor was that current morning man Si-Man would remain at the station as operations manager and the voice of the station. But I don't know for sure that's still the case.

Will there be any music during Steve Harvey's show (like Michael Baisden) or will it be like 10am - 3pm with no music? Lot's of interesting moves at this station lately, like them or not, it's kind of nice to see a personality in now 4/5 of the dayparts instead of 1/5. When the hell are they going to change their website? Are they Classic Soul 102.5 OR 102.5 WR&B). I know it's the latter on air, but it's really time to get the website changed!

Yeah its finally good to see changes made at WAMJ "102.5 WR&B." WIth Harvey in the mornings, Baisden afternoons and now SiMan at nights it sounds like a decent lineup. However, 10am-3pm with the talk shows looses my attention. I'm sure most ATLiens are at work during those hours and would rather hear some type of music instead of the same ol' stuff everyday.

Shawty is right.. This station is losing all my attention and quick! Si-Man in nights, thats what happened over at 104.1. I hate this.. another great sounding station gone.. DAMN.I think its time to move to another area, radio in Atlanta is really sucking out loud.. XM is not the answer, because I dont feel like thats real radio, its only a jukebox kinda deal.. Sucks. I will miss listening to 102.5.

A couple of factors are at play here. WAMJ does not have a competitive signal in parts of the market. In order to attract listeners, the station has to do something different. Also, Harvey, Dyson and Sharpton are all Radio One shows. So this keeps WAMJ's spending on programming down, which is necessary given the station's limited billings potential. So it all kind of makes sense.I always felt SiMan made a foolish move when he left afternoon drive on Kiss. He wanted to do a morning show, but WAMJ's signal had limited potential. The station had no chance of winning in mornings.

Talk radio has always been near and dear to Kathy Hughes, founder of Radio One.Ms. Hughes started in DC as a talk host....talk, with an ethnic slant, is a natural evolution for Radio One.It has been known for months that Radio One is looking for an Atlanta AM station(to purchase) to land the new talk network on. I thought they would buy 1690.....Weber beat them to it with his inherited fortune!!! There are not many AM's in Atlanta with any significant night service.....Radio One correctly determined 24 hour service is vital to making this new format work.I wonder if Alfred will dig deep and really promote this new venture!! Word of mouth is not going to work like it did with Hot 97.5. Talk radio is going to be a tough sell in the African-American community....it's going to take some clever positioning and programming/promotional efforts.BUT....if anyone can pull it off it would be Mary Catherine Sneed and Alfred Liggons!!

Remember how Radio One added Tom Joyner Morning Show to most of their Urban AC stations once they gained ownership? They even flipped formats and signals in some markets once Joyner became a part of Radio One. Its strange to see Harvey on a Radio One station since he was once with RO in LA on 100.3 THE BEAT with unsuccessful ratings.

Good point, and they even removed Joyner from very good signals and placed him on crappy ones! So don't go with the "Well, RO wants to keep him on the best signal in town" because that's bullBLEEP. My thought is, mabye Cox carries Joyner in other Urban Markets it has and RO didn't want to piss them off by yanking Joyner.Well, wait a minute, they removed Joyner from KMJN in St Louis, yet CC still has him on Chicago's WVAZ! So that theory is blown too.So why did they add Harvey? Someone at CC must have offered money. Either that or we'll be hearing Jeff Majors on CC Urban ACs shortly, something that hasn't happened, until now?

^^^ Wrong. Steve Harvey had excellent ratings when he was on The Beat here in LA. He fell out with RO's management and that is why he is gone from The Beat. Given the falling out, that is what makes it odd to hear Harvey on a RO station.

There's also irony here in Atlanta. Radio One owns 51% of Tom Joyner's radio program, yet Cox tied up a five year contract with him (I think) in 2004 before Radio One bought a majority share of Joyner's show. So they are placing a Clear Channel product (Harvey) up against their own product (Joyner) who happens to be on a rival station.

That's very true. And Kiss is unlikely to let Joyner go after the 5 years are over. Tony Kidd told me that he doubted the Joyner people would want to risk losing several other Cox stations by yanking Joyner from Kiss. While Steve Harvey has done well and is the younger, hipper show, Joyner has really gone beyond being just a radio personality to being a major voice for African-American causes.

Radio syndication is probably like how television buys shows. For example: One of Fox's high-rated programs is "House", produced by NBC/Universal. Now why didn't NBC pick it up instead of selling it to Fox? Because they make more money by selling it than as an original program. Tom Joyner's probably the same way. They can make more money with the syndication contracts instead of just placing it on their own stations. Because, as you know, the higher the ratings, the higher the syndication costs 'cause the suits will tell Cox at renogiation time...."Well, since OUR show got YOUR station $X in revenue, we will request an increase of X%" or something like that. Then, if Cox wants to play hardball, then RO can use their own station as a bargaining chip. "Well, you don't want to buy OUR show, we'll put it on OUR station and take YOUR listeners with it."And, Tom has been a mainstay for a long while and his influence crosses many boundaries. That alone makes him a hot comodoty.

Good points, except in Radio One's case, they did just that, they took Tom Joyner and placed him on their UACs in Several markets. Well, Joyner didn't do squat for the RO stations and meanwhile CC went out and got Steve Harvey and their UACs are now beating RO's stations.

That's another reason why I feel that RO isn't gonna yank Tom from WALR. They know that Cox has a option and that option is actually beating Tom in quite a few markets.

Now if Steve beats Tom in Atlanta, then RO has double the problems! ;D

isn't 'ethnic talk' served by 1380 am? can this city support 2 urban all N/T stations?

I know the demographics, just wondering if it makes sense. Some have made the argument that this city cannot support 2 sports talkers, and that's why 680 and 790 don't get higher ratings. Is this true?
