Steve Kirk

Anyone know if Steve Kirk is still alive. I understand that he and a man named Mitchell was on the Harley racing team and set a cross country record at one time, long before he was on radio. Any idea how to contact him if that is even possible. Thanks folks!

Steve is alive and well, soaking up the Florida beach sun in retirement. Still the same wacky sense of humor, still the same booming voice!

Can't find any online airchecks from his on air days in Dayton. His morning telephone put-ons were even released on an LP back around 1972. I could kick myself for not buying a copy (if any were released north of Dayton.)

Steve Kirk was also a pitcher for the Washington Senators.

I LOVED “Kirkee” on the air back in the day... HA – CHI-CHA – CHAAA!

Steve Kirk was a great guy. Met him twice. Kind of stange but cool.

There was one time I was trying to get an on-air job at the former WJAI (later WGTZ)when it was airing country. I forgot who the WJAI PD at the time was but although I didn't get the job he was nice enough to show me around the David Rd facilities in Kettering including the WING transmitter room and all of the studios. There sitting in a vacant production studio was Kirkie reading the newspaper. I never formally introduced myself but I did ask him where the restroom was and he was kind enough to tell me where it was. I said "Thanks Steve" to which he kindly replied in his "hi-ya gang" type voice: "That's okay my freind!"
Steve along with Kim Faris also rode a vintage 1950s fire engine going past the former downtown Rike's store when my wife and I took our two oldeset sons(still toddlers at the time) to the Children's Christmas parade in 1987. Kim Faris is still a sweetheart..I have talked to her several times when WJAI still had its studio at the corner of East Sommers and North Barron in downtown Eaton.

A few years later I was in high contention for getting the graveyard shift at WING in 1986 but at the last minute, they chose to hire a part timer from within.
I was THIS close to being a WING "lively guy" before I threw in the towel and took a regular job to raise my kids. Still.....meeting Steve Kirk only breifly and rather un-formally was a pleasant experience. He was an easy going (and somewhat shy)person off the air and didn't put on any ego-cenrtic airs.

Was also honored to meet up with and talk with the late Gene "By Golly" Barry when he breifly owned a record shop on a side street off of North Main across from the former Peaches record store when he was doing his Saturday afternoon oldies gig on the former WAVI. One of the most genuine, honest and outgoing people I ever met in the biz along with Stanley Coning over in Eaton at the former "Radio Ranch 1130" WCTM. People like Kirkie,Gene,Kim and Stanley are rare, precious and few in the biz.

In fact, a friend of mine just talked to Steve a couple of days ago. Let me also assure you he's fine, retired, remarried, and irascrible as ever.

And, for Kirkie Fan's sake: my first meeting with Steve was when I was about 10-11 years old. I stopped off at the old studios on First Street. Steve was on the air, and took the time to come out of the studio and offer me a donut. I never forgot. My first morning preceeding Steve on the air, I made darn sure the donuts were there and ready for him.

It's a bit that continued off the air. I agreed to "board-op" a private dance that Steve was to host one time. Unbeknownst to him, I bought a half dozen donuts and hid the sack inside my hop gear. So, when he arrived, I got on my mike to let him know, "I brought the donuts"! He got a big kick out of it. There's a lot of Kirkie stories I could tell, and though I know he, like anyone in the business, had his detractors, he is a genuine person and, if you get his respect, a good friend.

As for Gene Barry, I met Gene at a WAVI remote at the Dayton Mall around 1970 or so. I told him I was interested in the biz...and he said, "What are you doing this Saturday? I have to do some work at the station...why don't you have your parents bring you over about noon, I'll show you the production studio and how it works."

I was thrilled. My folks took me over to the station and Gene took me in the production room, racked up a reel of tape, showed me how to work stuff, gave me a couple of records, carts of commercials and jingles and let me go to town producing an "audition tape". I wish I still had that tape, but I think it's long gone.

Gene was a gentleman. And, he always made time for you. One night when he was on the air from the Radisson Hotel, I stopped over to check on his remote. He called me up to the DJ stand and made a big deal out of me being there with him. He didn't have to do that, but that was Gene. That's why I hurt so badly when I heard Gene had passed away. I look at guys like Gene and Kirkie like they were my "radio fathers". You'll never hear me say a bad word about either....

I assume you found the one in the left column on this page

and the long, but interesting video interview here

Glad you liked it. I loved listening to "Kirkie" when I was a kid in Kettering in the 60's. Last year I was googling around for him, and found a mention of a past airing of that 45 minute interview on a public access or community cable station (it's a sit-down interview, not the last-day-at-Wing video that's on the Dayton Broadcasters site).

After several emails, I found the right contact, who made me a DVD copy of the show for their standard fee of $15 or so. I put it on Google video a month or so ago (crediting the source), hoping other Kirkie fans would find it there- glad you enjoyed it!

If I recall correctly, he did noon-3PM on WSAI before Bob Harper came on at 3PM back around 1964-1965. Did he move to mornings on WSAI after that? When did he move on to WING?

Steve moved to mornings after Paul Purtan left in 1965, Steve left WSAI in June of 1966 after a dispute with management, probably started at WING in late 1966/early 1967

Thanks for the link. That brought back some great memories. Will have to go back and watch the rest at a later time. Maybe he mentions this but, does anyone remember the guy he used to do afternoons with at WING back in the late 70's or early 80's?

Steve Kirk came to WING on Labor Day, 1967...and retired 25 years later almost to the day. That was his plan from the time he signed his final contract with Great Trails Broadcasting 5 years before his retirement. He spoke about it quite frequently to me during those last couple of years.

The "DJ" another poster is thinking about from the 70's and 80's is most likely Terry Dorsey, who came to WING from WONE. He and (PD) John King held down afternoon duties for a long time. Dorsey was also known as "Greg Mason" during the early days of WTUE's Top 40 format. Today, he is the longtime morning host on country-formatted KSCS in Dallas, Texas.

If you have a copy of it you'd like to share, or if you'd be willing to allow us to post a link to the Google video, I'd love to put that on the Broadcaster's Hall of Fame site. Hit me with an e-mail soon, OK?

Jason- you're with the Dayton Hall of Fame site?

Gee, I tracked and hunted down that Steve Kirk interview video hoping I could get it somewhere where others might find it- that's why I put it on Google video and added a link to the WING wikipedia page. I figure anybody can link to any Google video anytime, no need to ask me or anybody else!

But if you want to also host it on the Hall of Fame site, email me at the gmail address centerpunch.

King and Dorsey came on afternoons roughly around 1979-80. King started the afternoon shift roughly at 2pm after John Alexander and Dorsey would join him about an hour later. Dorsey would finish up the shift by 7pm after "60s at 6."

Other afternoon "lively guys" over the years included(as my memory serves me):
Bob Holiday 1963-1965
Jerry Kaye 1965-1969
Ritchie Allen "Duke of Dayton" 1969-1974
Ken Warren 1978-79 (I think...but also did late mid-days following Lou Swanson around 1963-1966)
