Steve Kirk

This Dayton DJ service lists Kirkie as a current DJ........... is that for real?

It is correct in that Steve has worked with that company to "run the board", so to speak for private events which he has hosted. (I'm a friend and colleague of the guy who owns that company). Obviously, Steve doesn't do a lot of that anymore, being retired. But...if the price is right, who knows?

Jason- you're with the Dayton Hall of Fame site?

Gee, I tracked and hunted down that Steve Kirk interview video hoping I could get it somewhere where others might find it- that's why I put it on Google video and added a link to the WING wikipedia page. I figure anybody can link to any Google video anytime, no need to ask me or anybody else!

But if you want to also host it on the Hall of Fame site, email me at the gmail address centerpunch.

I am the webmaster for the Dayton Broadcaster's Hall Of Fame site and I am always keeping my eye out for airchecks, pictures, surveys, any Dayton radio memorabilia I can find.

I realize there may not be any need for permission for a link to a Google site, but I always like to ask. I'll get an e-mail to you soon...

Thanks for the link. That brought back some great memories. Will have to go back and watch the rest at a later time. Maybe he mentions this but, does anyone remember the guy he used to do afternoons with at WING back in the late 70's or early 80's?

King and Dorsey came on afternoons roughly around 1979-80. King started the afternoon shift roughly at 2pm after John Alexander and Dorsey would join him about an hour later. Dorsey would finish up the shift by 7pm after "60s at 6."

Other afternoon "lively guys" over the years included(as my memory serves me):
Bob Holiday 1963-1965
Jerry Kaye 1965-1969
Ritchie Allen "Duke of Dayton" 1969-1974
Ken Warren 1978-79 (I think...but also did late mid-days following Lou Swanson around 1963-1966)

Dave Parks was another guy who held down afternoons at WING in the mid 60's, too...when Jerry Kaye was doing mornings pre-Kirkie.

I'd be happy to mail the DVD for you to keep and use as you see fit, just let me know a mailing address.

Jas:

There is a Kirkie rarity out there somewhere which was released in the early 1970s as an LP entitled "Steve Kirk Put-Ons." Steve was notorious as you know with putting on pranks with listeners on the air. I remember it being advertised on "Clubhouse 22" on WKEF-TV but never ever saw the LP sold in stores in any of the smaller towns north of Dayton.

Wish I had that album to this day....if anyone has it,please post the audio online and let us have a listen.

Believe it or not, I had that album at one time, but don't anymore. I think we used it at WING in the 80's during a time when we brought the put-ons back on Steve's show. (Though the FCC had begun to tighten the rules regarding identifying telephone recordings, these were old calls which the station and Steve had obtained permission to air, so we felt we were in safe ground to replay them).

The best one on the album for me was when he called the "Mother/Manager" of a local rock band saying he wanted to hire the band for a party at his home. When he told Mom that it would be a nudist party and the band would have to play in the altogether, the woman's exclaimation of "OVER MY DEAD BODY!" was a classic!

Moments to remember

The circus parade in 1973 or 1974 when an elephant gave Steve a trunk full and he fell off. I had my son on my shoulders @ Salem and Emerson. What a moment.
