BLUE ROCKS ANNOUNCE THE DEPARTURE OF STEVE LENOX
Club's Play-by-Play Announce To Pursue Other Endeavors
Wilmington, DE--- The Wilmington Blue Rocks announce that Steve Lenox, director of broadcasting and media relations, will be leaving the organization as of Monday, May 1. Lenox has served in his director role and as the Blue Rocks lead radio play-by-play announcer since 2001.
Since returning to Wilmington in a full-time role in 2001, Lenox broadcast over 600 Wilmington Blue Rocks games on the Blue Rocks Radio Network. Over the past two years, he has served as a fill-in host on XM Satellite Radio’s Major League Baseball channel (XM 175) in Washington D.C. and served as the play-by-play announcer of the opening round of the World Baseball Classic from Tokyo, Japan in March.
"Steve Lenox has been a valuable member of the Wilmington Blue Rocks for over the last five years,” Chris Kemple, Blue Rocks general manager. “He has broadcasted more games than any other announcer in our organization's history. Steve has excelled as a play-by-play announcer and he will be missed by our staff, and more importantly, by all of our radio listening audience. We wish all the best for Steve in his future endeavors."
The Shelter Island, NY native spent the 1999 season with the Blue Rocks as a play-by-play announcer alongside Mark Nasser for all 70 Blue Rocks home games, serving as the broadcasting and media assistant. Prior to rejoining Wilmington, Lenox served as the director of broadcasting and media relations for the 2000 New York-Penn League champion Staten Island Yankees.
Lenox broke into professional baseball in 1997 and spent the 1997-98 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for the Batavia Muckdogs, a short-season affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies in the New York-Penn League. A 1997 graduate of SUNY-Brockport, he earned a bachelor's degree in communication with minors in history and sports coaching.
“I am taking this opportunity to explore other career endeavors,” said Lenox. “I understand fully that the timing of my decision is not the best with the season underway. I appreciate the Blue Rocks understanding the decision that I have made. I have developed some wonderful friendships over the years here in Wilmington and I will always appreciate how wonderful people have been to my wife and me.”
The Blue Rocks are in the process of creating a broadcast team that will continue after the departure of Lenox. Nick Barrale, who serves as the assistant director of media and broadcasting, will continue to serve in his current role.
Lenox and his family will continue to make their home in Wilmington, DE.
The Blue Rocks will conclude their six-game home stand on Wednesday at home against Kinston. The club will take to the road for a seven-game road trip, beginning on Friday with the first of four in Winston-Salem.
