I have a lot of respect for Steve Mann.
I maintain if WQUT wanted to be more of a player, they'd ditch the tired old "John Boy and Billy" and return to Steve Mann. I realize that might be looking to yesterday for tomorrow, and I might be overstating Mann's talents a bit here (can't you give any other score for the Super Pick other than 28-14?) in my longing for my youth.
But Mann IS talented. And my guess is if this hypothetical did occur that it would relate more to the WQUT audience, who is now primarily of an age that remembers when Mann did do mornings for what was then a CHR with some rock leanings, than John Boy and Billy currently do.
I never got that. When Mann was on WQUT they were No. 1 in the market. I'll admit there are more factors to that- country had taken something of a downward turn in the late '80s that wasn't revived until Garth Brooks came along and attracted the people who were fleeing from CHR because of rap music entering the scene, plus WXBQ had competition back then (US 99 and such).
But WQUT had competition too (WZXY, for instance).
Anyway, best of luck to Steve Mann. I'll try to give the new show a few listens next week.
