STEVE MEET JACK

Robert Feder reports in today's Sun Times that Steve Dahl will be moving to JACK FM 104.3 and that WCKG
will be changing formats very soon.

Is this going to be any competition for the rest of the morning shows and will it really help Jack FM's ratings? I think Dahl didn't have much competition in the afternoons so he did well. That may not be the case on the morning drive.

Well, if you consider Johnny B and that mess on Q101 competition, then Steve will have some. I can't predict who will win. I'd like to know how well Johnny B does though. It's the question of whether Steve can move his audience from their morning routine to his new one. Can't wait to watch and listen.

Steve doesn't fit with the demos of the rest of the radio station. Bad move for both him and WJMK.

Sorry Dan Mason. More schizoid radio.

Not a bad move. It keeps the WCKG cash cow in the family and justifies his contract. Jack is the most obvious dumping ground.

Any chance of Meier joining him?

Thats the problem. Its a dumping ground. Makes no sense formatically.

Meier might make it a big deal and that wouldn't surprise me. But you're going to wind up with a block-programmed station.

Here we go...

Let's build a music intensive radio station with no jocks. Then after...what two years when the station is finally stating to show some sign of life...they move Dahl over to Jack. Any listeners that they have in am drive will be gone and Dahl doesn't have the numbers to bring am drive up on that station. Plus you are going to piss off all those music fans to no end and you'll blow out the rest of the day.

Bad move!!!!

They could have put Dahl on the Score in PM Drive and he would have kicked a**!

Plus how does a 50+ year old guy retrain his body to wake up at 3am and be entertaining. Go to the bathroom...sure but do a radio show?

I believe the tombstone will read RIP JACK-FM 2005 - 2008

Agree entirely. And The Score makes perfect sense. It would kick some serious ass.

Bad move on Mason's part. Steve does not fit with that format. If Mason had been smart he would have blown out O&A and put together a good morning show plus fixed nights, and then spent some $$$ to draw cume to WCKG. If you break down the total adults 25-54 CKG doesn't do that bad. They have high TSL and low cume. WLS is in bad shape due to a lot of off the bird, New York based, right-wing crap. WCKG could have been something. Nice move Dan.

What makes all of you think a music change will not accompany Dahl's transfer to 104.3?

How do we know for certain "Jack" will stay?

I can certainly picture 104.3 going in a Classic Hits direction.

I agree, it happened in New York. I was a fan of the old WJMK, and would like to see it go that way again.

Its nice to hear that some personality is back on-air live (possibly). WJMK's Oldies site has said "Coming Soon" on their personalities page for months, so I thought that something was coming soon, and Dhal may be that answer.

I just don't understand why CBS doesn't get that most listeners don't want a computer doing music instead of a live person. People can relate easier to a person than they can a computer.

JACK-FM was a failure in New York City, and the ratings show the same here. And now that CBS is looking to staff the station, it just backs this statement up.

My opinion is that you can put a JACK-FM format in a small market, like Wichita or Omaha, for example; but people in New York and Chicago don't want it.

I cant beleive you have changed the format on this station. You took off Steve and Wendy? How dare you? I am completely devasted. This was a black radio station and now its white? You didnt even tell us. I hate you so much for this, I just cant say. This is such a racial move. My God, I dont even know what to say. I dont think I will ever listen to radio again.

Are you quoting me from above? Because I wasn't even talking race.

Um, would I be wrong if I suggested that the author had their tongue firmly planted in their cheek?

I think not.

There may be some truth to this. Here in Nashville, JACK-FM is #2, right behind Mix 92.9 at #1. Both are owned by South Central Communications, so I suppose that would make Jack a success. Prior to becoming Jack, 96.3 was oldies, and they were #4 in Nashville, I believe. It seemed puzzling at the time that a station which was #4 in the ratings (and Mix was #1 then, too (2005)) would change, but it seems to have worked. 97.1 tried to take over the oldies format for about a year, but then even they, too, gave it up.

I believe those webbies are correct!

I'd like to see it. Although I like JACK it gets a little stale at times. I can see 104.3 morph back to Classic Hits similar to WCBS. Dahl's AM show could be much like The Breakfast Club on WOGL with Ross Brittain. Lots of banter about news, entertainment, sports with some music featured in between all of that.

BTW, 104.3 still has the Classic Hits HD. What's the point? Unless they were seriously thinking about making a format change.

I know. That's the website that said under the Personalities link that "Coming Soon" is listed. I think they may bring something like that back. JACK isn't the worst, it just needs a full live staff. I would like to see 104.3 go back to the classic hits format. That would be a million times better.
