Steven Clean - RIP Rock Radio King

"Steven Clean ... Steven Alan Segal passed today, 10.29.22.
Less than 24 hours after Jerry Lee Lewis, the last living architect of Rock & Roll left - we lost one of the creators of FM Rock Radio

Steven birthed the careers of countless artists and musicians and media women and men to take the ball and win the game."

Some say he gave Barret Hansen the Dr Demento nickname

Barret "Dr Demento" Hansen comments via the Official Dr Demento Facebook page:
Steven Clean/"Steven Seagull" has passed on.
"Steven Clean not only christened me Dr. Demento, he made my whole radio career possible. He showed me (and many others) that you don't need a "radio voice," it's what you say (and the music you play) that counts. He recognized when we first met that I had an unusual and unique knowledge and perception, and guided me along the path as it turned into a highway. Steven never asked for anything in return. I only hope he realized how grateful I am for his guidance and his kindness."

Some airchecks posted online:

For a brief moment in time, this is what radio sounded like. Or at least a handful of stations in a few big cities. Then John Kluge decided he wanted to make money with his FM stations, and things tightened up at Metromedia.

I used to listen to Dr. Demento when I lived near an affiliate.

I guess he could still have had such a show without the name, but it helped.

My way of hearing Steve Clean was through airchecks. If I lived in Los Angeles during that time, KHJ and KMET would have been stations I would have mainlined into my bloodstream. I don't know if his loved ones read message boards like this, but I liked his on-air personality, and wish more of that sound existed.
