If tomorrow really is the last show, I have not heard a word about it - on air, online, on the street, anywhere. I'd almost suspect they're being paid off for their silence, but that makes no sense either. Steve has considerably less ego than most of his counterparts, but I can't believe he'd leave the market that made him a star for 20 years without any kind of send-off.

What's the thinking here?

It was mentioned in passing at least once this morning in a promo for some sort of contest that they do every Friday. Steve said it was "the last time" or words to that effect.

But yeah, I agree, there's been no build-up to this and I think that's probably Steve's doing. One, he's not one to toot his own horn, and two, he says he's not retiring.

I wonder if they'll open up the phones tomorrow morning and let the people say goodbye like McKee did 18 Novembers ago...

Rob Stadler made some heartfelt remarks in the 8AM hour this morning after station staffers piled into the control room with congratulatory signs. It happened during comedian Kathleen Madigan's appearance on the show. Rob sounded a little emotional but Steve, Vikki, Tom and Shannon, who apparently had agreed to keep the show low key and not let things get out of hand, stayed upbeat and said humorous things. Madigan seemed really caught off guard by the whole thing.

For their last break, Steve went around and thanked the listeners, then Tom, Rob, & Shannon...and finally Vikki.

He got pretty choked up right at the end. Vikki didn't say much, though. She didn't seem too upset...probably because she knows that they'll be back together soon (B?)

They closed out with Elton John's performance of "Your Song" that he did for them a few years ago.

I never, truly never, listen to Star 94, but I did today. I listened to pretty much the entire 9:00 hour. Steve got a bit emotional at about 9:45. It was kinda strange... I don't claim to know S&V well enough to read too much into their voices, but they certainly didn't sound like 2 people who were leaving of their own accord. Am I naive to believe the reports that this is voluntary? Have I missed something?

Vikki announced a few months ago that she was leaving "for health reasons" (which you can find on the Star website)...and I guess management thought that without Vikki, there's no show!

Not sure if you heard him say it, but he did mention that they (not HE) never thought they'd leave Star 94 "this way". Not sure what to make of that.

Yeah, I knew the "health reasons" thing, but a few of Steve's comments this morning were a bit cryptic, almost indicating that they could resurface somewhere. I found it a bit awkward... Maybe it's just me not being a regular listener.

Conflicting statements everywhere. Vikki says it's health and Steve was quoted as saying that he wouldnt work with another co-host and would have to leave also. Then Steve says 'its not the way I'd want to leave,' which is a veiled way of saying he was pushed out. So, how do you reconcile the two statements? IF Vkikki's leaving and you wont work with anyone else, then only Marcus Welby can keep Steve at Star. Add to that the implication that they'd work somewhere together again and that puts Vikki's health concerns in a new light i.e. how sick is she, really?

My theory: Lincoln is paying S&V, Tom Sullivan et al as much as $1M in salary and finally got tired of it, so both got pushed out with a generous settlement and Vikki used the health concern as the excuse. Which is not to say she fabricated it, but more like something she could use to cover up the backroom dealings. Steve has no idea what to say.

Weird chapter in Atlanta radio history. At least with TRG, you insult the Mexicans and you get canned. Everyone understands that!

While Vikki clealy had some health issues with the blood clot. If a lifestyle change was necessary to improve your condition would you announce you are leaving 7 months in advance. Why not just quit then if health is your primary concern? A year from now Steve and Vikki will probably reunite with whatever station decidesx to flip and take on B98 in AC. Their age makes them a better fit for that demographic than their current station. I also expect Star to star moving to a youger demo with some tweaks of format.

I guess I'm the only person who believes Vikki's health is the real reason she left. The AJC article contained specific concerns expressed by her husband, and I don't think Mark Kanov, who I know and respect, would have allowed comments like that to get out if they weren't true. As to why she didn't leave when she announced it, RTibbs, her situation was not life threatening and to be fair to the station, she wanted to fulfill her contract, which ran through the end of the year.

As far as Steve, I'm guessing he probably wanted to stay, but of course I don't know that. I did hear him mention this morning that it's hard to believe it's their final show, but that sometimes "the hard realities of the radio business" hit you. So my thought was he probably wanted to stay, but the station felt he wouldn't be the right fit with a young co-host.

So if she had three years left on her contract would she have fulfilled that also? I just think somewhere in between her health and her contract the truth does lie.

I also think sometime off to recharge the batteries will give her the strength to make another run at. Steve and Vikki although I am not a fan really will sell ads so for that I think there is a good home for them out there somewhere. If not Steve will certainly make a livable wage while he sits on the millions in the bank.

Health reasons might make Vikkie want to take a break for now, but I see her returning somewhere in the market. I think Steve got pushed out because the show wouldn't work with another cohost. I agree that at this point, they'd be better suited on an AC station.
