Steve White Show - Audio here

His obit said "Wight." Never understood the fascination with him but I guess his heyday was a bit before my time (I'm 29).

I think the only fascination was that he had some balls and he wasn't afraid to talk candidly on the air. I tend to like anyone like that. There is something very freeing about a host not holding back on the air. I've always appreciated radio like that. That was the appeal for me. Unfortunately he never seemed to rise to the heights that he probably deserved. I think if he had been willing to move around the country a little and move up the ranks, he could have been more successful.

However he seemed to be pretty settled in Rhode Island. I don't think that he wanted to go anywhere. So he kind of limited himself. Plus he seemed older when he began. He had to be in his mid 40's when I first started listening to him back in 1984! So even back then he wasn't exactly a hungry jock in his 20's who may have been willing to go that extra mile. He just settled into a comfort zone here and I don't think he was all that motivated to become anything more. '

He was an entertaining listen though. Somehow that clip I uploaded yesterday already has almost 200 downloads even though the hits on this thread are much much less. I have no clkue how that happened. Apparently someone here passed the link around and now it's making the rounds. Steve might be one of those guys who ends up having more fame after he's dead.

Oh well..... there you go.

Since we’re on the subject of the Captain, check out Steve White’s Easter message.
It can be seen on Rhode Journey on Cox Channel 13. Thursday 4pm, Friday 7pm, and Monday 9:30am. Christians and Steve White fans will find this very inspiring.

The original broadcast is from April 11, 1997, it was a live broadcast.
We did the program from the recording studio at WALE. Five minutes before the program Steve walked in and handed me a pile of records, along with a list of cuts he wanted. It was always last minute and spontaneous with the Captain, it was the time of my life.

Steve really seemed like a nice guy. I used to call him as a teenager. He invited me to be a guest on his show at HJJ simply because he knew I wanted to get involved in broadcasting. Then when he worked at the old WKRI in West Warwick he offered me a job on his TV show. Unfortunately I got busy with school and never called him back. He was always generous in wanting to help me out though. I'll never forget him for that. Very cool dude!

The Captain was probably one of the more talented and compelling broadcasters this market has ever seen. Unfortunately for him, he didn't know how to handle the success he acheived in a very short time. He was totally self destructive. He had issues with the police (use your imagination), he was a drunk, and took advantage financially of the "old bags" who listened to him. If he could've kept his head straight, he absolutely would've been as big as Imus or Stern. He knew how to captivate an audience.

Almost EVERYONE I know in radio drinks as if it were Friday night and they were Sailors!

Steve was simply the greatest of all RI talk hosts. His ratings proved that.
On WHJJ Depetro came close to the fire Steve had, but it's just different on WPRO.
But, White was captivating.

I tried listening to the link, but all I got was some idiot 17 yr old girl talking garbage.

Thank you for the Steve White link. It will live on my Zune. I "followed" Steve from day 1. Some of the best stuff was while he was on HJJ. Funny how the Bud-I is now doing "The Steve White flight" huh? I am kidding, of course.
I am not in radio but I play one every day.

A great talent who went from the number 1 radio guy in the state (with a credible race for governor) to paying for a show on WALE Saturdays between Rick Adams and Doctor William Pierce of the Nazi Party.
Interested in finding out what his police problems were.
