Steve Young

I've just heard that Seattle radio legend Steve Young has passed away. He had been struggling with various health issues and developed heart trouble, complicated by pneumonia during a vacation cruise through Mexican ports.

Details are sketchy and I'm sure much more info and tributes will be forthcoming. He had spent the last eight years or so as a programmer and consultant for Seattle based Jones Broadcasting, recently purchased by Dial Global. After the sale he received a promotion to Senior VP.

He leaves a big legacy over decades of Seattle broadcasting and will be greatly missed. RIP, Steve.

Steve Young was a dear friend to me and to my co-workers. He was our primary consultant for almost a decade and will be terribly missed. Not only did Steve understand programming, but I believe his biggest gift was his understanding of people.

Steve's tough exterior covered a warm-hearted man. He was a great teacher and the lessons we learned from him will stay with us for years.

Sincere condolences to Steve's family from everyone at Commonwealth Broadcasting.

I agree completely. Steve Young not only had one of the most impressive resumes I've ever seen, but his knowledge and instincts about radio were the best. I too had the privilege of knowing him and being on the receiving end of some complimentary remarks. Coming from Steve Young, that really meant something special. I will miss him as a friend, and the industry in general has just suffered a huge loss.

I will miss this man very much. He was a wonderful programmer, a man with a wealth of knowledge of broadcasting, music, Canada and life. Just in the short few years that I got to know Steve, he treated me as if I was programming KROQ in Los Angeles, not programming in market #250 in Iowa. He had passion for growing people and being genuinely concerned about their careers and their lives. He will certainly be very missed by many. My thoughts are with his many broadcasting friends around the globe, and perhaps more importantly, his family in Canada. RIP Steve.

Knew Steve when I was at a rock station in a small market and that cowboy cared as much about you in market 250 as he did when I was in Dallas or here in Seattle. A big ole smile and a big ole heart and a big ole instinct for radio talent and what truly mattered. He will be missed :'(

Very sad news. He did a great job at KISW and did some good work at Broadcast Programming/Jones/Dial Global.
