Steven Tyler on CHR

I recently caught Steven Tyler's new single "It Feels So Good" on Buffalo's WKSE sandwiched between two dance songs. Are any other CHRs spinning this now? It seems kind of out of place with today's new music sound, but maybe this marks rock's comeback to the CHR charts. Any thoughts?

It's #49 right now on the CHR chart, and it got 18 new adds yesterday, so a lot of stations are spinning it

I doubt it would be getting any spins if it weren't for Idol, but oh well, he's not hurting anybody

Yes I have thoughts. People or listeners like you are the reason why CHR has tanked and depleted for many years. Especially the first 8 years of the 2000's and for most of the 90's. People like you have made contemporary radio of any sort, into a chess game. Where do you move the pawns. When did Steven Tyler ever have to be Justin Beiber's age to get airplay on a CHR playlist. Does an artist have to be under 25 years of age to be added to a CHR playlist? Many of the veterans whether their R&B or Rock still make boys out of the current stars (Not that I'm saying that they aren't as good ) but they you just write them off. Steve Tyler is an excellent add (if the single is good) to place with the rest of the currents. He's a co-host or popular panel judge on a hot TV show which targets a wide mainstream of Justin Beiber listeners to all the way of the Aerosmith listeners. He appeals to the mainstream. When Michael Buble has a hit, 17 year olds on the board question does he fit in. The world isn't just made of Katy Perry , Rihanna, Whiz Khlifa, or Usher. .....wait a minute...he's been charting since 97'....(Wait a minute....I'll have to start another post on whether his time is up at CHR). Sound ridiculous?

Maybe I didn't interpret his posting correct, but Catcall didn't attack the idea of Steven Tyler being played on CHR because of his age. He made an observation that's been largely true about CHR for about the last 15-20 years: that the older you are, the harder the chances of getting played on CHR. It sucks that it's happening because some good quality music is being passed up. However, we're dealing with a much different audience now than 20 years ago. I was just looking at last week's American Top 40 chart and only three artists (J-Lo, Dr. Dre and Diddy) on the chart are over 40. A few others, like Eminem (who appears with Dre on "I Need A Doctor") and Pink, are over 30. In other words, you have to either make music or be a part of something that appeals to a lot of young people. Which is why all the aforementioned artists are still charting right now.

I'm not sure his age is gonna be as much of a problem as the fact that this song is REALLY generic - I think it might get into the 30s or high 20s, but IMO then it's gonna hit a brick wall and tank

BTW Catcall didn't even mention age in his original post

I never took into consdieration his age but you all make good points. Tyler kind of transcends age.

On a platform that's dominated by dance music, an 80's sounding rock song took me by surprise. I'd love to see Tyler make a comeback on the charts.

Speaking of age, isn't it about time Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, and Usher....etc mysteriously vanish from CHR? OR will these artists from the 90's - 00's who have been holding strong to chr (or even making a come back) be the ones to make older age acceptable to chr once again, like the way it was back when Cher, Whitney Houston, and Madonna..etc were topping the charts with Britney, J-lo, Enrique Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, Snoop Dogg...etc? If everything goes in trends / phases, then couldn't this "only younger artists allowed" rule of chr radio society be a temporary trend that will also come and go? Right now, it seems like we have quite a bit of a long line of artists who seem like they'll last a long time in pop, so it will be a while before there is another "cut off" where the older folks vanish from chr and we are only left with younger artists. I don't see any break or generational gap where this could change, unlike the time when Cher and Madonna were "booted" and everyone else left were pretty much just the younger pop groups.

The only way I can see the older artists getting cut off again is if current music trends change due to a new style the youngest, newer generation may create, causing many of the middle aged artists who cannot (or don't desire to) keep up with the change in sound to lose their fame, and at the same time, people like Usher, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z..etc. all disappear.

...Unless, of course, technology unexpectedly advances, bringing along a more popular form of radio, causing the whole way in which we classify music charts, plan formatting...etc. BEFORE we get to see how long the current chr acts will last on current traditional (Chr) radio.

I just wonder how long this "come back" phase will go on? Does anyone remember BACK when Lil Wayne, Enrique Iglesias, J-Lo, New Kids on The Block, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Black Eyed Peas...etc. were first known on certain charts? Did anyone expect all these people to all come back as big as they are, once again, on CHR? Did anyone think Lil Wayne would be the last one standing from Cash Money records? Does anyone see anybody or any band/group else out there who could surprisingly make a come back?

Is it possible that when alternative / rock resurges, you'll start seeing certain rock artists / bands coming back?

Alot of the veteran artist like Pink, Black Eyed Peas, and Usher 's material has been better now, then back when they started. Even though they charted successfully back in 2001, 2005, or 1997 etc...their material they have been putting out the last few years is much more superb and mass appeal to the mainstream audience was much then it was then. The hooks , the chorus, the breakdowns are catchier, melodic, and of course they sing alot more then relying on overly electronica funk, rap, fusion, samples that we had put out roughly from 1997-2008.
Usher 's "Yeah" era was horrible IMO...but OMG, DJ Fallin in Love was the best stuff he's ever put out. BEP's I Gotta Feeling and the current single , (recapping roughly the last 2 Albums) have been "new and improve from their their early LP releases. MUCH IMPROVED.
So these artist like even Eminem's last summer single was likable, so it shows that these artist improve with age. Now , since the Car's just released their new album...let's add "Sad Songs" to the CHR playlist.

I saw that this has cracked the CHR Top 40 on Mediabase. Is Kiss 108 playing it? Just wondering...with the Boston connection to Tyler.

So Tyler was a guest on the Matty show, but Kiss 108 won’t play his new song…Tyler should have made his visit to the studio conditional on his song getting at least 5 spins per day
