Still Cumu-less

So, rumor has it that Cumulus-Buffalo has a new Market Manager. First, it's gone unmentioned on this board, which I find disturbing. Secondly, it's gone unmentioned in local business media. Third, in trying to find more information, I found that the Cumulus website STILL doesn't include the former Citadel markets, and the Citadel website hasn't updated anything since the "merger".

WTH kind of company is this? Have they no sense of even basic information that should be included on their website? The entire Cumulus website looks like a Word template anyway, but you'd think that they'd have had time to include HUNDREDS OF STATIONS THAT THEY PURCHASED.

Truly, they are Cumu-LESS. Maybe the new Market Manager/GM/Dickey Boy will get his name on the Buffalo station sites, and possibly even the company websites some day. Meanwhile, Chet Osadchey lives on at Cumu-less - at least via the Internet.

The new MM in Buffalo is Steve Bearance. Formerly MM at Cumulus's Lexington, KY cluster. He worked for a uniform company and family once owned a car dealership in Erie, PA. Since arriving, 2 sales veterans and a business manager have resigned.

Two sales vets? That's somewhat understandable if they weren't hitting their numbers or the new GM made life unbearable with unattainable demands and procedures. But why would a business manager resign? Was something amiss?

Lew Dickey became the $20 Million Man in 2011.

From the just-issued proxy for Cumulus Media’s May 8 annual meeting – CEO Lew Dickey’s total compensation for 2011 was $19,889,797. Let’s round it up and call it $20 million, and it’s mostly due to the option awards worth a potential $15.2 million. But everything was going Lew’s way last year, and not just because he finally corralled Citadel Media. Over the last three years, Lew’s base salary grew from $921,884,000 in 2009 to $940,000 and $1,122,042. Then there was his bonus – up from about $470,000 to about $940,000 to $2 million last year. His outright stock awards tripled, from about $550,000 to $1 million to $1,558,400. He had no option awards listed in either 2009 or 2010, but was awarded $15,193,479 worth in 2011. Also on the list of the company's five most highly-compensated individuals – Lew’s brother John, one of the two EVP/Co-COOs. John Dickey finished 2011 with $5.4 million, including $3,646,435 in option awards. As usual, John’s paychecks were richer than the other EVP/Co-COO, Jon Pinch. His total compensation for 2011 was $3,732,782. Senior VP/General Counsel Richard Denning and Senior VP/ Chief Financial Officer J.P. Hannan each did just shy of $1.9 million.

It's all about synergies.

A knowledgeable source says the internal jockeying and pandering has begun. The loss of the Bills, a new GM and key departures have made for a lot of uncertainty.

The Cumu-less Buffalo sales department exodus is racking up its biggest numbers ever, just in recent days. Elisa (unknown seniority), Griffin Jones (5 years), Lisa Brocato (8 years), and now Trish Wiest (10+ years). Expect a big recruiting net on the streets. Ladies and gentlemen, blow the dust off those resumes!

Hmmmmm???

The very first question to ask...."if those folks with longevity are manning the lifeboats (by choice or otherwise)...why would anyone pull out the Pledge to dust off THEIR resume" ???

The second question is "why would there be a recruiting net...if their losing their people (by choice or otherwise) with longevity" ???

Shuffle the lists. Reduce commissions. RIF and Recruit. Could be the aforementioned senior account executives exceeded the Cumulus Salary Cap. "If you're customer-oriented, goal-oriented and have good communication and technology skills, if you've sold rugs and uniforms, your earning potential is unlimited. We'll teach you how to sell radio the Cumulus way!" It's never a good sign when established, productive sales people walk or get the boot because it almost always trickles down to programming and air staff.
