Still Jack in our future after NYC results???

If you did not see the news in the trades recently, in New York after WABC switched from Oldies to Jack-Fm, the station tumbled to #22 in the market. It seems that Jack's around the country are suffering similar fates. I was wondering what this trending means to the plans for a JACK to enter this market in the near future? I know that was the original plan for WLTS if the sale to Galli went through.

Also, was curious if people still have arguments about Jack being a viable format? I think its a flash in the pan that is fizzling fast.

Its a shame this board is turning into nothing more than cheap banter back and forth with nothing more than slams against the people who contribute to it.

I asked a legitimate question for opinions for and/or against Jack FM. I personally think it is a format that will die quickly. I know there are those who may disagree.

Mak and the crew reluctantly gave us this forum after people begged for an Altoona/State College board and for the past 2 months, not much useful has been said by anyone except to slam a user or two because their opinions are not in favor with one's own.

That is a shame. Anyway...if anyone with an opinion wants to share their thoughts, some of us are all ears. I'd hope even with all the consolidation in the marketplace, there has to be more than ONE opinion out there. One company may own most of the market's frequencies, but I sure hope they don't own all their employee's minds too.

Steve,

Jack fell flat on WCBS-FM in New York.

It has done respectable on KCBS in LA.

I thought an all-80s format would fall flat on it's face in 2005, but here in Milwaukee, WQBW, has come out of the box great for Clear Channel. Steadily in the top-5 in Milwaukee.

In State College, if you target the residents, a well programmed Jack station could be successful.

Hope all is good in my old stomping grounds.

Reason for change?

Ordinarily, format changes--to Jack or Country or Polka (whatever)-- happen at stations that need to change, because what they're doing now isn't working. Prior to the Spring Arbitron, one might've said Lite or WOWY looked like candidates, but not now. And since--starting with this coming Fall book--the local "books" are going to be 2-book averages, the rankings won't change dramatically anytime soon. All the Forever & Galli FMs and 3WZ have solid stories where they are. Among the lower rated FM sticks, Buzz seems dedicated to what they're doing and GMR is only a few months into their new thing. So who has a reason to become "Jack?" As boring as it may seem, the State College market might be looking this way for a long, long time.

You must be getting different trade publications from the rest of us. WABC did not change to JACK-FM, WCBS-FM did. While the clear out of oldies listeners caused the ratings to drop in two TRENDS, the fat lady is nowhere in site.

As for the rest of the country, JACK-FM is not trending down. Seattle went from the bottom of the ratings to the top in adult demos and is now #5 overall after five months. LA is going great, Nashville is #1 25-54 and #2 12+ with a 7.8 and the beat goes on.

I could see State College doing well with JACK. I used to program there and I'm pretty sure it would work. Someone should call ABC and pick up the satellite version.
