Still seeking 7-Eleven radio commercials from 1967

Southland Corporation based in Texas issued Y.Y. Wickie Slurp reports,
those zany 7-Eleven AM radio commercials, in 1965 and 1966.
In the Summer of 1967 they issued radio spots using the word "slurpee" for the first time.
These commercials utilized a kazoo for sound effects.
Somebody somewhere must have these darn things in audio format.
DJ Steve Eberhart was gracious enough to send me the ones from
1965 and 1966 last year. I have no clue how the 1967 ads were issued to radio stations
for them to play as I have never seen any 45 rpm or LP's.
(These are NOT on the 45 promo issued in 7-11 stores with "Dance the Slurp")
Billy Lee Riley did some impersonations for some slurpee spots imitating
Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard among others. I'm not sure
whether these were from 1967 or 1968. My search for these is also a total zero. :(
Does anybody out there have any of these audio files? Will trade or pay your price. ;)
Thank you.

7 eleven had an "in house" ad agency that produced most of those spots.
Dan McCurdy used to head up a lot of that. He lives in Sherman now.
The best place to start would be with the Southland Corporatioin. It is possible they
still have archive copies but you never know. Best to find someone inside to look for
you. If you call and ask, you'll typically be put off with the corporate line "we don't do that..." kind
of thing. But if you know anyone within the organization, you can usually have more fruitful results.

Steve,

I wrote Southland a letter last year and they replied that they were "happy" to inform me those funny commercials were safely tucked away in their vaults. However, they were unable to issue them to any individual or entity due to the royalty rights having long expired. They thanked me for my interest and sent me two slurpee coupons. :'( I tossed that letter away, but if anybody knows of a contact inside Southland that might be able to help, I would give that a try. ;) Thanks for your input Steve.

I have a record somewhere with about 3 or 4 commercials for Slurpees....you know..... things that happen to people after having a Slurpee.

Theodore,

Thanks for your input, but that is the flipside of "Dance the Slurp",
the promo 45 rpm that 7-Eleven issued circa 1966.
"The Strange Things that Happen to People who slurp at 7-Eleven".
These were some of the commercials that aired in 1965.

Maybe a bit off the main topic but I distinctly remember "Slurpee" being called "Icee" up until about '66-67. Maybe I am remembering wrong. Many times I rode my bicycle to the 7-11 at Plano Rd and Kingsley to get me a Coke Icee... mmm good!

Megapsyche: Your post really brought back memories...my family used to visit Dallas often in the mid-60s, staying at the old Holiday Inn or the Executive Inn at Love Field (back when kids could run around at night there without worrying their parents). Around the corner was a 7-11 and, man, those cherry Icees!

Is it just me, but wasn't there a team of two guys who did 7-11 spots back then statewide? Was Dan McCurdy one of them?

This should resolve it. Yes, apparently it was sold under the Icee name at 7-11, 1965 until 1967.

One problem in the article...it says 7-11 manufactured their own syrup for the Slurpees until the late 1980s (but didn't the "cola" version always taste like RC?) So how does that explain the "Dr Pepper Slurpee" introduced in 1977? (and remember those metal cans of 7-11 brand soda, sold at a big discount over name brands? All tasted very Shasta-esque.)

Sure miss the old YY Wicky commercials. Last time I heard YY/Frank Harting (Hartung?) was on a veterinary school commercial with Harting voicing a basset hound. A guy put together a site a few years ago (perhaps the orginator of this thread?) called scotchproductions.com, and was going to feature some of those 7-11 spots, until 7-11 stepped in immediately and put a cease-and-desist order on him. Site still works, but not sure if this is the same person who started it.

The "in house" company that did the commercials was Group 7 productions. They had a building at 75 and bryan st exit. It's still there but is now Channel 29. I had a friend of mine that worked there full time and part time with us at KTLR-FM in Terrell. They had a pet cat that ruled the place called "Rewind".

He made me a cassette copy of many of the 7-11 commercials as well. Hav no clue where it is now but if I find it I'll let you know. They also did production for Chief's Auto parts and American Airlines. They closed it in the late 80's and sold the building. Have no clue it it exsists at all or in a closet.

Ive written to Gordon. He came along later in the scheme of things.
From his website:

"Gordon Nicol was born in Edinburgh the capital of Scotland. In 1979, he left and moved to Dallas, Texas.
In 1980, he joined Studio 7 which had three audio recording studios and a large duplication facility. Gordon was there for ten years. In that time, it became Group 7 Productions and then IPS Productions. "

He knew of nobody that had the commercials from the 1967, 1968 years. :(

I grew up in Fort Worth listening to those great old 7-11 commercials. I located this site in a google search and am looking for those old 7-11 commercials featuring Y. Y. Wicky. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who can get those just to reminisce. Thanks so much. Ken

I've found obscure stuff on YouTube. I recently found an old WBAP recording of Marty Robbins visiting Bill Mack's program, that I would have never heard otherwise.

There are all kinds of old commercials out there & audio would be easy to save.
