Still waiting on the 105.9 move-in (ASHEVILLE)

???Anyone know any more about the 105.9 move-in to Asheville? It's been a while since I have heard anything!!

It's still on the air up here. Saga has closed on their purchase. However, the local college is running the station until it moves. The CP hasn't been granted yet. Not sure what the hold-up is.

Any ideas on format? I spoke to Ken Ulmer about two months ago at 96.5 WOXL and he said it would not be classic rock, country or AC. It would have to be different then Star 104.3 WQNQ. So what else would it be?

Are they gonna go lefty female talk like 106.3 in nearby Greenville? ;D

I think a very hot Hot AC makes the most sense. Or, perhaps they could keep the format they are currently running up here: Trainwreck.

I notice on 100000watts.com a call change over in Tazewell, is this a start to the move in process ?

WCTU 105.9 Tazewell TN changes calls to WTMT.

Hmm those calls would be good for Asheville....

The Mountain 1059
Asheville's Alternative Rock

Just my opinion, but I think a less-popular format like Alternative Rock would be a dumb idea, for a couple of reasons. First, there's The Planet, which has been around for a LONG time, and still doesn't have such great numbers in Asheville. At least, not great enough numbers for the station which will end up being the second-biggest commercial stick in the market. I'm not so certain there's a large enough audience in Asheville to support that format. For that matter, there's a national trend showing that the Alternative Rock format is a dying one.

Asheville is probably the only market of it's size around without a CHR-leaning station. If you combine the numbers WFBC, WHZT and WJMZ have in Asheville, you have a book that's not too shabby. Also, look at the nosedive WQNS has taken since they separated the simulcast with WQNQ. Why wouldn't classic rock work on the new signal? In the not-too-distant past, Classic Rock had a 6-share.

Finally, and I'll throw this in just for fun...what if they programmed country to try to steal some of Kiss's audience? I know, that may sound dumb at the outset, but look at the way Kiss is being programmed. Just last week they let two personalities go, and more are probably on the list. It'll be an even more automated station soon, I'm betting. If Saga could offer something compelling and some great personalities, they might just steal some of the audience. Look at it this way...Kiss has a huge audience...they could steal a third of it and have a great book. Just a thought. It would really take some hard work to pull off though.

I plead lack of caffeine, what I was really thinking is a station more like XM Cafe, Hear Music, or Sirius's Coffee House, a singer-songwriter format.A classic rock wouldnt be a bad choice either, but only if 96.5 returned to a more "oldies" format

Haha and I'll plead overdose of nyquil. I"m not familiar with XM Cafe or the others. To me, the winning combination is to return WOXL to a real oldies format and play classic rock on the new signal. Then again, when you combine that with sports talk on WISE/WYSE, they'll dominate the male demographic in the market, and most agencies are buying women these days. Wait, that came out wrong...you know what I mean. Any thoughts on my CHR idea?

Classic Rock would seem like a good idea, but would cannabalize WOXL if they stayed in their current (SAD!) state. Seems like the best choice, like Broker said, would be make WOXL mostly 1964-1975 Oldies, maybe some big hits from 75-79, but focus on the 60s like they did when they first came on the air. Sprinkle a couple of pre-64s in every hour. Leave the 70s rock that they're playing now to 105.9. With the airstaff they have now and if they get some GOOD imaging, it should come back. It's not too far gone, yet.

The XM Cafe sound they are talking about is aTriple A which would probably do real well in Asheville. WNCW has a more Americana sound, and a commercial Triple A would probably be more mainstream and accessable. Heck, is there a soft AC up there?

With Asheville also being a huge retirement community...a format geared to baby boomers would be a no brainer. A True Soft AC in the market would go big time...much like The Dove in Tampa.

(he he ) I'm just barely a boomer, and I remember listening to WDUV, back when it was in Bradenton, with a B/EZ (elevator) format.Whatever the format, I hope they do have a lot of local DJ's, not just automation-when I first moved to this area I really liked Z-96.5 (WZLS)- it just sounded like asheville, kind of eclectic.

I forgot to post on this thread. Thanks to The Broker for making one of the comments I planned.

WMXF is almost like WDUV, based on WDUV's last songs played on its web site. But it needs a better signal in Asheville.

Maybe not for an FM, but Adult Standards makes PERFECT sense in Asheville. Why somebody isn't doing it is beyond me. The retirement community in Asheville is quite large, and they are well-qualified. There are hundreds of businesses in town which would love to have another outlet through which to reach this demographic. A station which catered to them would be a financial success, if promoted properly. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I had a station in Asheville...

Standards on an AM has been tried. Even on FM, that would a hard road since the majority of songs on a nostalgia station are too old for Baby Boomers. A True Soft AC plays today's standards.

Standards on AM has been tried, and it didn't fail. In fact, it did quite well. I'm not speaking of the time when the format wheel on 880 landed there for about four days. I'm speaking of WISE. That format didn't change because the station failed. The format there changed when Saga bought the signal for a whole lot of money.

If you program a station as "adult standards", who says you have to stick to just the songs that some programmer somewhere defines as being included in the format? Branch out a little. I'm not talking about a Jack format or anything, but why not add the songs which have become "standards" over the years? Isn't it the goal of standards to create a nice "easy listening" sound? Nobody ever said that sort of sound couldn't include songs which were recorded after a particular date. This sort of format truly would work in Asheville if the right folks tried it.

Oh, and Spindoctor...when the devil puts on ice skates, that's the point at which I'll have the particular Asheville station you speak of. There WILL be an adjustment in your check on Friday for that comment.
