Emmis Sells St. Louis' 'Red' To Radio One
Emmis Communications announced this morning that it is selling Adult Standards WRDA-FM (Red 104.1) to Radio One for $20 million, trimming away what Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings called a "non-core asset" for his company in the market.
"Red was a novel format that our staff in St. Louis executed well," said Cummings. "But after 18 months, the results have not been robust. Radio One has been looking, for some time, for another property in St. Louis, and this was the ideal time for Emmis and Radio One to put the deal together."
Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins said, "Through this acquisition we will complement our current single station in St. Louis, thus greatly strengthening our competitive position in this large urban market."
Radio One plans to begin operating the station under a local marketing agreement on Oct. 1.
Meanwhile, Emmis will continue to air Red's programming via the web at
www.red1041.com. The company is also planning to air the station's 80s- and 90s-based format on Talk KFTK-FM/St. Louis on weekends.
Even though I would like to see Emmis do a Hip-Hop format more than Radio One, but mostly likely they'll try Hip-Hop again and go after The Beat.
