STOOPERTALK FUTURE

Indianapolis radio listeners are turning a deaf ear to the market’s newest talk-radio offering.

According to recently released Arbitron Inc. radio station ratings, the newly formatted WWFT-FM 93.9 is fighting for its life as central Indiana’s fourth news-talk frequency.

The station that dropped its contemporary Christian format and old WISG call letters the day after Christmas registered a paltry 0.8 rating in the first quarter, according to New York-based Arbitron’s most recent tally. Meanwhile, its commercial newstalk competitors, WIBC-AM 1070 and WXNT-AM 1430, saw slight ratings increases. Public station WFYI-FM 90.1 also draws an audience hungry for news-talk fare, but Arbitron doesn’t rate its market share.

Atlanta-based Cumulus Media Inc. saw the bottom fall out at its 93.9 frequency, which scored a solid 3.7 rating during the last quarter of 2006 playing a combination of easy listening tunes and Christmas music.

One rating point means 1 percent of the local audience tuned in at least once a week.

“They have some issues to address there,” said longtime local media buyer Bill Perkins, president of Nichols Perkins Media. “Advertisers were concerned about this change heading in; now they are even more concerned about where this station is headed. The next ratings period is really going to be important for WWFT.”

And what's the programming? They even have Hannity? Look familiar?

It's FM talk -- but it's Cumulus FM Talk -- done by the guys who took CC's formula of squeezing dollars out of big markets and used it to squeeze pennies out of tiny markets. They'll never build a successful talker because that takes money, hiring local talent and cultivating a larger than life image, especially in Cincinnati, which expects nothing less.

Being from Indy, WWFT has a "local" signal that barely reaches the western suburbs of Indy. The only thing worth listening to (IMHO) is Dave Ramsey, which is delayed in a strange way. ( the first two hours are recorded the day before during his 2nd and 3rd hours, and the final hour is live!)

The other programs, as my wife tells me, is all "I'm right, they are wrong"

WWFT is running TV (with Sean Hannity doing the spots for his show, no one elses) and billboards, but has ZERO local shows. All off the bird.

What a mess!

Wow. Not much of a comparison is it mr. midwestxfiles? What's your beef with Supertalk?

Considering Supertalk in Cincinnati has a live afternoon show and is pretty much live now all day Saturday, I would say the stations are somewhat different.

That's the problem...the network they used was 10X better that Fish and whatever Weasel is going to put out. If they get 3 calls per show I would be AMAZED!

They bought .. I mean brought.CC management over. spent A LOT of money. We'll see, but I think Cumulus will have a 2 year plan (ala Air America) First year, will lose a ton of money with no ratings, then after year 2 with no results, the salary dump will start. ...

By the way: I hope they didn't pay full price for the new jingle package.. IT SUCKS Big Time. Sounds like it was done at OCB...

Sorry scotch, but I'll take Fish over Sporting News ANYDAY. Weasel is going to be interesting. At least they're doing something other than "flippin' the bird."

Jingles? You must really listen a lot.

Scotch is a programming ace and knows how to fix all the "problems" and make killer radio. That's why he spends so much time listening and kvetching about it. ;D

they play jingles every stopset

and Thanks WyllyWylly . It's about time you noticed!!!

Here is a quote from your previous post

"Oh, and since I happen to be part of the Supertalk staff, thank you for telling me that what I do is a waste of time. It sure doesn't seem that way from my perspective."

Now I know why you take the StooperTalk bashing so personally... It's just radio...Are you Fish's producer and have a ton of free time? Are you the prod. guy and ashamed at the dreck you "produce"? Do you see the writing on the wall and notice that 96.5 is turning into a hybrid KRC/Homer format....just like CC...Which is why they bought so many Sales people over there. All the stations here have a problem. From CC, to Cumulus, to Entercomm, everyone. A little ribbing shouldn't really get under your skin that much...Should it ??? Lighten up Francis!!!

Don't pat yourself on the back too much. I 'd hate to see you strain a muscle from your exuberance.

Here's where we agree to disagree. I don't for a minute believe that anything I do for Supertalk is a waste of my time, or I wouldn't be doing it. Neither do I consider any of the production "drek" whether personally responsible for it or not.

What I see are people committed to making this thing work. Since you already know so many things, you're probably aware that the decision to make 96.5 into an FM talk format was not made locally. For the individuals that make up the staff, it's not about whether anyone agrees with the format or not. It's about making the best possible radio, each and every time. You don't like Fish? Don't listen. Don't like the jingles? Create something better and sell it. What I'm trying to get across, and it will most likely fall on deaf ears, is that criticism itself is quite easy. Constructive criticism takes a bit more effort. Supertalk is a young station, with many changes likely to come. The trends come out tomorrow, and from what I've seen in the past few books... you are among the minority. If Supertalk was that horrible the numbers would not continue to increase.

I take pride in what I do and I don't take comments that I read on the Internet personally. REally. I promise you I will not lose one wink of sleep over anything I read here. I simply find it amusing that so much complaining gets done on these boards but there's very little in the way of constructive criticism - it's just plain criticism. You're great at the latter. How about trying some of the former?

Have and will!!

Good for you!!

as per one of your former posts "opinions are like..."

Yes I knew that

Trust me. I won't

Don't like the jingles? Create something better and sell it.

Have done it and currently doing it.

What I'm trying to get across, and it will most likely fall on deaf ears, is that criticism itself is quite easy. Constructive criticism takes a bit more effort.

Way to go!! Bravo!!

Given the length of you prose....It did hit you in the heart. And passion is something I like.. Way to defend it!! Let me know in 2 years when the format changes yet again...I'll probably hire you...maybe

scotch...how are you going to hire anybody? Didn't you once write that you work from midnight to noon? What are you going to hire someone to do, stock shelves at Bigg's?
