STOP the begging!

Is it me or has Public Radio, a.k.a. Public Begging picked up the pledge weeks.

It's painful!!!!!!!
I sent you my check, now STOP!

When Mrs. Kroc of McDonald's fame died, she left them millions and millions.
She should have put a requirement in there.
NO MORE than 1 pledge drive a year.

Wouldn't it be great if commercial radio could get on the air and threaten to pulll your favorite shows if you don't PAY UP!

"Wouldn't it be great if commercial radio could get on the air and threaten to pulll your favorite shows if you don't PAY UP!"

Actually, I kind of like that idea! Maybe I could actually hear what I wanted to hear...instead of something a consultant is sure I want to hear...

That said, the structure of pledge drives is pretty painful. I think 30-60 sec live cuts during shows are enough... those 2-4 minute marathons were the "host" has very little to say... are really, really annoying.

For 12 In A Row & radiothis...

As most PBS stations will tell you...the people who take the phone calls and solicit pledges over the airwaves are all VOLUNTEERS.

Obviously, these volunteers would like to have their 15-minutes of fame, correct? So this is the reason the PBS Pledge Drives exceed the 30-60 commercial spot limit (as broadcasters know it).

Many years ago there used to be a TV show called: "Dialing For Dollars." Perhaps the PBS radio and TV stations could update the concept and eliminate the words: PLEDGE DRIVES in favor of calling these segments: BEGGING FOR BUCKOS! :p

I would guess I'm not the only one who really doesn't give a damn whether some volunteer wants his 15 minutes of fame or not. To be honest, I'm a lot LESS likely to open up the checkbook when they do these marathon beg-a-thons.
Maybe they ought to think of the viewers for a change instead of feeding the egos of somebody who got roped into being the pseudo-celebrity of the hour on some pledge drive.

NPR and religious stations have turned into the same.
send money! "if you like the programs you hear..."
"if you like the ministry offered....."
NPR is a cult!
or acts like one.

That may just be the future of most smaller AM and FM stations in America, 10 years from now. I do not see how advertising can pay for the operations of such stations in the future. There also will be a point where colon-cleansing (so-called)products' radio ads will wear thin, and therefore not support stations.

Smaller stations will encounter more costs to operate in the future. More FCC regulation and more royalties for songs played. And with today's and the futures' numerous media choices, there's really no other way for stationary terrestrial stations to survive.

Comedy Central had some guy who was talking about having to serve a one week sentence in the county jail.

The judge gave him 2 choices:

1. A week of hard labor out in the cold/?
2. A week of listening to a public radio pledge drive?

He took #1

I have to agree. I don't listen to NHPR much anymore but their email blasts are a total beg-a-thon.

What's really amusing...at least on the television side...is that there will be a PBS Auction coming up in April, May or June?

But at least this is an opportunity to acquire a reconditioned Bendex Refrigerator, a Motorola TV (before HDTV kicks in during February)...or something no home should be without.........................A COWBELL! ;D

It's Monday, I thought by now the begging would stop.

But NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The breaks are done by the, we're in love with ourselves and YOU can't live without us, self important people.

I'm calling my doctor and scheduling a colonoscopy and my dentist for root canal.
I've stopped listening, I'm NOT sending you another check.

Please for all of us, STOP THE BEGGING!

Mrs. Kroc is spinning in her grave.
