Storm could knock down radio antennas

N

NwzAir

Guest
Heard this latest windstorm coming to the Puget Sound area this weekend
will possibly knock off ALOT of power - and perhaps effect many radio stations..

Which ones would you think have their antenna's knocked downed?..
..OR, do post which stations ARE off air currently due to the weather.

I saw Jim Foreman out 'in the field' last night talking about the big approaching storm. I have lived in Seattle my entire life and if I have learned anything it's if Jim Foreman is out predicting bad weather, and if Seattle weather professionals are predicting bad weather, it ain't coming, The next day on TV you will hear "the storm just barely missed us all".

My point is...if they predict it, it shall not come. If they don't predict it, it 'came out of nowhere' are the words you will hear.

My guess...no storm.

OMG - you'd think we've NEVER had a wind storm - EVER? Or that the tower designers flunked their structural engineering classes? C'mon. Get real.

My guess - even if there IS a storm - not a single tower will topple.

Fact is that all towers in the area have to be engineered for 90 mph winds as the very minimum, just to be legal. Maybe a couple of the high school or college stations are just at this minimal level. And maybe one or two of the older AM towers have rusted enough in the salty air to have dropped below design specs.

But it's highly unlikely that we will lose any broadcast towers around here in this storm, even if it turns out to be a lot worse than they're predicting.

On the other hand, look for a lot of awnings and flagpoles to join the trees on the ground. And some of those trees will undoubtedly cut power lines and interfere with home enjoyment of the Hawks winning the game.

But remember, all the major broadcast operations in the Seattle market have backup power. Assuming they've been maintaining those generators, of course.

The Big Dick prediction is: business as usual at the TV stations for Super Bowl. But you might have to watch the Hawks win by candlelight at your house if it gets nasty out there during this storm. And the good lord help ya' if your cable company loses power in your neighborhood.

Plan that Super Bowl party at the home of a friend who has Satellite and Big Screen. If he doesn't have a generator, invite a friend who has one of those little Hondas. They're good for several hours, plenty for the pre-game, Hawks victory and the gloating afterwards.

And bring a propane hibachi for the hot snacks. Then it can blow and puke all it wants outside. It should be cold enough outside to keep the beer in a cooler with just some ice. Make plenty of ice now so you're ready if the lights go early.

YEAH! That's it baby...dead radio towers everywhere!!

But seriuously, the wind may blow in some cool tropo-skip FM. You just never know. Stay tuned..

We got inside connections to a local Pizza Hut. They will be taking care of the chow. I got 2 cases of Molson, 2 Heineken, 1 Budweiser and 1 MGD in the garage. Plus, a fresh crop of Purple Monkey Bud for my electric hookah (we're going to be taking HUGE tokes for each touchdown.....)

SO true! In fact they've changed the time frame of when the storm's going to hit twice already. I flipped over to one of the national weather channels on TV tonight and they didn't even MENTION a BIG STORM in our area (of course, we heading towards the PNW that "wasn't as big as some of the ones we've been having". Go figure!
