Strange Activity on WSHO-AM

I was dialing around in the truck this afternoon and heard Paul Harvey on WSHO 800. After listening to his broadcast and feeling a little nostalgic hearing him on AM again, WSHO proceeded to simulcast WNOE-FM for probably another 90 minutes. Sometime after 2 p.m., I checked 800 again; they were off the air, and remained so at least through four o'clock. What's up???

WSHO and WNOE share a frequency used to send program audio from their respective studios to their transmitter sites. This is a common practice as there are only so many of these frequencies available and everyone has to share channels. Yesterday there was a transformer underground that provides power to Plaza Tower that failed, shutting down WSHO's STL transmitter. That allowed their receiver to capture WNOE's program audio. This is why you heard NOE audio on 800. Clear Channel is not buying WSHO and has nothing to do with their operation.

Thanks RadioEngineer for the explanation! Very interesting.
